On the cusp of the fall season, the University of Denver women’s lacrosse head coach Liza Kelly announced the addition of 10 incoming freshmen for the 2017 season.
“This freshmen class has the unique challenge of being the first class to compete in the Big East Conference,” Kelly said. “A challenge I know they are up to.
“With 10 players from eight different states, the class of 2020 brings a diverse background to DU. I am excited to see what they accomplish in their four years at Denver.”
The newest class of the women’s lacrosse team features student-athletes from across the nation, including eight from the east coast, one from Minnesota and one from California.
Eliza Hacke (Midfield, 5-7, Fr., Devon, Pa./Conestoga HS)
Another champion hailing from the east coast, Hacke joins Denver after leading her school to the 2016 PIAA state championship to cap off an illustrious career.
Hacke started for the Conestoga High School Pioneers for three years and directed them to back-to-back undefeated seasons in 2015 and 2016 en route to the championship her senior year. She was named the Philly Showcase MVP and All-Star, selected for The Ride by Nike Lacrosse and was a member of the Nike Elite 120 for two years. Hacke also played for the Phantastix lacrosse club team.
The daughter of Jon and Suzanne Morris, Eliza will major in business while attending DU.
Hayden Dean (Defense, 5-7, Fr., Corte Madera, Calif./Redwood HS)
A four-sport standout from Corte Madera, Calif., Dean comes to the DU women’s lacrosse team after four years as a center for Redwood High School. She was also a four-year player in basketball as a power forward in addition to one year as a setter in volleyball and was a captain for the 2016 first-year field hockey team.
Dean started all four years for the Giants, was a member of the Stick With It lacrosse club team and was a four-time North Coast CIF Scholar Athlete while being named to the First Team MCAL All-League Varsity Lacrosse. She was also named captain her junior and senior year while earning the Offensive Player of the Year award.
The daughter of Peter and Michele Dean, Hayden will study mechanical engineering as she attends Denver.
Caroline DiGiacomo (Midfield/Attack, 5-9, Fr., Keswick, Va./St. Anne’s Belfield School)
A two-sport athlete from Keswick, Va., DiGiacomo will join the Pioneers after a distinguished career at St. Anne’s Belfield School where she was also the number two player on the tennis team.
DiGiacomo anchored the midfield for the Saints, finishing on the All-LIS team on three occasions while earning a spot on both the first- and second-team All-State VISAA Division I. She was also named team MVP, a Mary King Blake award winner and played for the Geronimo lacrosse club team.
The daughter of David and Diane DiGiacomo, Caroline will major in business while attending Denver.
Carson Gregg (Goalkeeper, 5-9, Fr., Severna Park, Md./Severna Park HS)
A member of the MPSSAA 4A Maryland state champions, Gregg comes to DU after a decorated career at Severna Park High School.
Gregg was a team captain for the Falcons her senior year, and was a brick wall in the net when they claimed the championship. She also played varsity soccer for three years while at Severna Park and was a member of the Integrity lacrosse club team.
The daughter of Kevin and Lynda Gregg, Carson will study business as she attends Denver.
Rachel Karwacki (Midfield/Attack, 5-8, Fr., Sparks, Md./Hereford HS)
A two-sport standout from Sparks, Md., Karwacki comes to DU after a productive career for Hereford High School as a four-year starter for the lacrosse and field hockey teams.
Karwacki led the Bulls to a 26-2 record in her final two years, capping off her career as four-time county champions while earning a spot on the All-County first team. She led her conference in draw controls for three consecutive years and led in assists her senior year while named to the All-Star team. Karwacki was a member of the Nike Elite 120 in 2013 and 2014 and was an Under Armour All-American and member of the championship team in 2015. She was also a member of the TLC Lacrosse club team.
The daughter of Rodger and Karen Karwacki, Rachel will major in communications and journalism as she attends Denver.
Annie Lyman (Midfield, 5-9, Fr., Deephaven, Minn./The Blake School)
One of the most decorated lacrosse members from Deephaven, Minn., Lyman joins the Pioneers after completing her career at the Blake School.
Lyman captained the Bears in her final year and was a two-time All-American as a junior and senior while leading her team to a fifth straight top-three finish in the Minnesota State tournament. She helped lead the team to three consecutive state championships from 2012 to 2014 and was a four-time member of the All-State first team where she was the lone freshman in 2013. Lyman was also a three-time member of the All-Tournament team, and a two-time member of both the All-Metro first team and Under Armour All-America Midwest team. Additionally, she was a member of the Minnesota Elite lacrosse club team.
The daughter of David and Beth Lyman, Annie will study business while attending Denver.
Laura Milleker (Midfield, 5-9, Fr., Severna Park, Md./Severna Park HS)
Another member hailing from Severna Park, Md., Milleker comes to DU after securing the midfield all four years at Severna Park High School.
Milleker was team captain for the Falcons and a member of the All-County team in addition to her track prowess where she qualified for state twice as a sprinter. She was also a member of the Maryland United lacrosse club team.
The daughter of Mark and Katie Milleker, Laura has not declared a major as she attends Denver.
Hannah Ross (Defense, 5-7, Cranford, N.J./Cranford HS)
Leading her team to its first ever conference championship, Ross joins Denver after a distinguished career at Cranford High School in Cranford, N.J.
Ross was team captain for the Cougars and was a two-time member off the All-Conference, All-Division and All-Group teams. She also played on the N.J. North National Tournament team and Under Armour Underclass team for two years and played in the Inside Lacrosse Committed Division Invitational games. Ross was also a member of the Building Blocks Lacrosse club team.
The daughter of Andrew and Diane Ross, Hannah will major in business as she attends DU.
Caitlin Smith (Attack, 5-3, Westhampton Beach, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS)
A four-sport athlete from Westhampton Beach, N.Y., Smith comes to the Pioneers after an illustrious career at Westhampton Beach High School.
Smith was a member of the Hurricane varsity lacrosse team for five years as was named to the All-Division and All-Tournament teams while finishing on the All-County team her junior and senior years. She also ran track starting her sophomore year and was a member of the volleyball and tennis teams, ending her tennis career at the first singles position. In addition, Smith was a member of the Top Guns lacrosse club team.
The daughter of Tom and Jen Smith, Caitlin will major in education while attending Denver.
Caroline Wyse (Midfield/Defense, 5-7, Newton, Mass./Newton North HS)
Participating in seven different sports in Newton, Mass., Wyse joins DU after starting all four years at Newton North High School.
Wyse was named to the Bay State All-Star league for the Tiger lacrosse team in addition to participating on the basketball and volleyball teams her freshman year. She was also a member of the indoor track team her sophomore and junior years, and competed in hockey, soccer and gymnastics at Newton North. Furthermore, Wyse was a member of the REV lacrosse club team.
The daughter of Timothy and Miriam Wyse, Caroline will study business as she attends Denver.
The Pioneers open up their fall schedule on Saturday, October 1, with their Crimson and Gold scrimmage at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium starting at 12:00 p.m. MT.
