The Haverford School claimed a 10-7 win over New Canaan (CT) to claim the Session 2 championship Tuersday at the National High School Lacrosse Showcase at Blandair Park, Columbia Md.
The Fords struggled early in the three-day tourney, losing to Mountain Lakes-NJ, 7-6, and New Cannan, 9-3, in their first two games of pool play. Then they settled in and beat Bergan Catholic-NJ, 11- 3, and Paul VI-VA, 9 – 4, finishing 2 – 2 in their pool.
It was good enough to be the No. 8 seed in the championship bracket. The Fords defeated top-seeded Maryland powerhouse Calvert Hall, 5-1, in the first round, and then faced Philly neighbor Garnet Valley, winning 8-5.
The win pitted Haverford in the finals with a rematch against New Cannan. After being down, 4-3, at halftime the Fords rallied with five second-half goals to take the title. Rising Seniors were key to the championship. Midfielder Ryan Jacob was championship game MVP and Goaltender Parker Henderer earned tournament MVP honors.
“We lost a lot of very talented players over the last few years but I think we showed that we can be a pretty good next year in our own right,” said Jacob. “But it will take a lot of hard work.”
Henderer added, “Everyone really stepped up after the first two games and I think we are finding our identity as a team, if we continue to work, we should have a successful season next year.”
