From Press Release
Seven high school All-Americans highlight the University of Delaware men’s lacrosse recruiting class of 2020 that has enrolled at UD and will compete for the Blue Hens during the 2016-17 athletics season.
Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw, who will enter his 39th season at the helm of the Blue Hens this season, announced a class of 16 standouts that includes seven All-American and numerous all-conference selections and conference champions.
The recruits represent nine different states, including five from Pennsylvania, two each from New Jersey, New York, and Maryland, and one each from Delaware, Georgia, North Carolina, Colorado, and California.
“Our coaching staff is eager to begin working with this year’s squad and is excited to see how the incoming freshmen blend in with the returning players,” said Shillinglaw. “This is a very talented group and we are excited to see how quickly they adapt to playing Division I lacrosse.”
Delaware will begin fall drills next week, Sept. 19, and will compete in fall exhibition games on Oct. 23 when the Hens host UMBC and Robert Morris in a three-team exhibition series.
The list of All-Americans includes midfielder Luke Bianchino (Salesianum/Wilmington, Del.); goalkeeper Matt DeLuca (Farmingdale/Farmingdale, N.Y.); attackman Brian Cunningham (Auburn/Auburn N.Y.); attackman Charlie Kitchen (St. Augustine Prep/Marlton, N.J.); defenseman Zach Strassner (Charlotte Catholic/Charlotte, N.C.); and midfielder Beau Kush (Avon Grove/Newark, Del.), who were honored this past spring; and faceoff specialist Crosby Matthews (The Lovett School/Brookhaven, Ga.), who was an All American during the 2015 season.
The talented group also includes midfielders Cole Baker (Valor Christian Academy/Centennial, Colo.); Tyler Henderson (Acalanes/Lafayette, Calif.); Ryan Shaw (Boy’s Latin/Owings Mills, Md.); and Matt Waters (Rumson-Fairhaven/Rumson, N.J.); faceoff specialist Aaron Kager (Manheim Township/Lancaster, Pa.); attackmen Bryce Reid (Avon Grove/West Grove, Pa.) and Matt Schleicher (Conestoga HS/Hun School/Phoenixville, Pa.); longstick midfielder Drew Silvera (Episcopal Academy/Bryn Mawr, Pa.); and defenseman Connor Sorg (St. Paul’s/Bel Air, Md.)
DeLuca was a two-time All-American and two-time Nassau (N.Y.) County Goalkeeper of the Year; Kitchen was the 2016 Southern New Jersey Player of the Year; Baker was a member of the 2016 Colorado state AAAA state champion team and played for former Blue Hen All-American, UD Athletics Hall of Fame member, and current professional star John Grant; and Shaw is the son of former Delaware All-American and UD Athletics Hall of Famer Steve Shaw.
Kush, Bianchino and Kitchen were First-Team All-Phillylacrosse.com picks this year.
