Brown senior face-off specialist Will Gural (Haverford School, Duke’s LC) won 11-of-13 second half face-offs to lift then fourth-ranked Bears to a 14-12 come-from-behind upset win over #1 Yale on Saturday, earning Brown its first win ever over a number-one ranked team before a record crowd at Stevenson-Pincince Field and earning Gural the Ivy League Player of the Week.
Trailing 9-6 at the half, Gural won 11-of-13 face-offs in the second half to lead the Brown surge. He scored a goal three seconds after winning a face-off to spark a 6-0 Brown run that rallied the Bears from a four goal second half deficit.
Twice he was responsible for goals at the end of a quarter, the first at the end of the first quarter when he won the face-off with eight seconds left and fed Kylor Bellistri ’16 for a Brown goal with three seconds remaining. Gural then won the face-off to give Brown possession with 13 seconds left in the second quarter that led to a Bears goal with no time remaining.
Overall, Gural scored two goals following face-offs, handed out two assists, picked-up a game-high 11 ground balls and captured 19-of-27 face-offs. Gural is third in the nation in Division I in face-off percentage at .685. He has won 135 of 197 draws.
Brown strengthened its bid for the Ivy League title and NCAA Playoff berth with the victory as Henry Blynn (Haverford School, Duke’s LC) added two goals.
The #3 ranked Bears host Providence College tonight at Stevenson-Pincince Field, starting at 7:00 pm.
