Women’s recruits: @SJUHawks_WLax announces Class of 2019; includes Brierly (SCHA), Donato (Neshaminy)

Saint Joseph’s women’s lacrosse head coach Alex Kahoe (Agnes Irwin) has announced the incoming Class of 2019, which features nine freshmen from four states and Australia. With the departure of just one starting goalkeeper and two total letterwinners from last year’s team, this group comprised of four midfielders, three attackers, and two goalkeepers will join SJU’s 24 returners for the 2016 season.

New to Hawk Hill are Jenna Ansell (Hunt Valley, Md./McDonogh), Ally Beck (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur), Sinead Brierly (Oreland, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill Academy), Michaela Cassidy (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), Francesca Donato (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), Rebecca Lane (Victoria, Australia/Maribyrnong College), Mary Martin (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern), Shannon Murphy (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep), and Hayley Sabol (Londonderry, Vt./Burr and Burton Academy).

“I am excited to welcome our nine newest Hawks to the field this spring,” said Kahoe. “We took excellent steps forward as a program last season, and I feel that our newest addition of student-athletes will work hard both on and off the field this year.”

Sinead Brierley • A • Oreland, Pa. • Springside Chestnut Hill Academy • Business
A two-time All-Inter Ac First Team selection, Brierley recorded 125 career goals over her four-year career at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. The attacker out of Oreland, Pa. registered 34 goals, 14 assists, 59 ground balls, and 62 caused turnovers as a junior and twice earned team MVP honors along with the Blue and Gold Pride Award. A two-sport athlete, Brierly also lettered in soccer and earned three All-Inter Ac soccer honors as well as team MVP and Coaches Award accolades.

Francesca Donato • A • Langhorne, Pa. • Neshaminy • Criminal Justice
A three-time All-Suburban One Conference First Team selection out of Langhorne, Pa., Donato capped a four-year career for Neshaminy as the program recordholder in career goals (319) and single-season goals (105). Donato led the league in scoring with 125 points (105G, 20A) as a senior to help lead her squad to a 9-8 record, the first winning record in program history. A two-time Bucks County Courier Times Lacrosse Player of the Year and two-time Bucks County Courier Times “Golden Team” First Team selection, Donato was a four-year varsity letterwinner and two-year team captain for Neshaminy, where she broke and re-broke the school scoring record three times and earned the squad’s Best Defensive Player Award as a junior. Donato was also four-year midfielder and leading scorer on the Ultimate 2015 Club team. A two-sport athlete at Neshaminy, Donato competed for the 2013 soccer squad that went 25-0 and won the state title. The incoming attack has been a lead counselor for girl’s lacrosse programs at Coach Paul Deppi’s Quick Stick summer lacrosse camp over the last three seasons and will be involved with the Philadelphia Service Immersion Program at Saint Joseph’s University.

Jenna Ansell • GK • Hunt Valley, Md. • McDonogh • Food Marketing
A two-time National Champion at McDonogh High School, Ansell helped the Eagles to undefeated 21-0 records in her junior and senior seasons. The goalkeeper out of Hunt Valley, Md. was a four-sport athlete at McDonogh, also earning letters in volleyball, cross country, and indoor track, and raced for cross country and indoor track squads that claimed league titles.

Allison Beck • M • Ocean City, Md. • Stephen Decatur • Actuarial Science
A four-time All-Bayside Conference selection at Stephen Decatur High School, Beck led her squad to two conference titles, two regional titles, and the 2015 state finals. The Ocean City, Md. product was tabbed the 2014 Defensive Player of the Year and 2012 Rookie of the Year and received the Coach’s Award as a junior. Beck was a four-year varsity letterwinner and senior team captain for the Seahawks and also lettered in soccer and basketball, leading both of those squads to 2015 Bayside Conference Championship titles. The incoming midfielder was also a two-year member of the U.S. Lacrosse Regional Team from 2013-14.

Michaela Cassidy • M • Annapolis, Md. • Broadneck • Business
Cassidy earned three letters in the midfield at Broadneck High School and led her squad to the 2013 3A/4A state championship as a sophomore.

Rebecca Lane • M • Victoria, Australia • Maribyrnong College • Social Science
A 2015 U-19 World Championship All-World Team selection, Lane co-captained the U-19 Australian National Team at the FIL Rathbones 2015 Women’s Lacrosse U-19 World Championship in Edinburgh, Scotland this summer. Lane recorded 24 points (13G, 11A) and added 20 draw controls through seven games and scored seven points apiece against the Czech Republic (5G, 2A) and England (4G, 3A), earning MVP honors for both games. Lane added multi-goal performances vs. Canada (2G, 2A), and in the bronze medal game vs. England (2G, 3A). In 2011, Lane was tabbed the Most Valuable Player in Australia’s game against Canada at the World Championship and also earned All-Star and Tournament MVP honors for the U-17 National Tournament. The incoming midfielder out of Victoria, Australia earned All-Star accolades at the 2014 U-18 National Tournament and owns two MVP medals, including one in the grand final, in 2014 senior national tournaments and also competed for the 2013 Senior Women’s Victorian Lacrosse Team. A member of the School Leadership Program at Maribyrnong College, Lane is a four-time Principal’s Award recipient and earned the 2011 Sports Director’s Award, presented to a sports academy student that achieves high levels in sport while maintaining a high GPA. Lane played for U-18 Premiers as a junior and U-17 Premiers as a sophomore and competed for both U-17 and U-15 Premiers as a freshman.

Mary Martin • GK • Airmont, N.Y. • Suffern • Biology
A three-time regional and sectional champion at Suffern High School, Martin led her squad to the 2013 state finals, back-to-back state semi-finals, and to a Top 25 national ranking in 2015. The incoming goalkeeper out of Airmont, N.Y. was a 2012 All-League and All-County selection and earned the Coaches Award as a freshman and took home the bronze medal at the 2015 Goal Guardians National Championship. Martin earned four varsity letters in lacrosse and also lettered in field hockey at Suffern.

Shannon Murphy • A • Reisterstown, Md. • Notre Dame Prep • Business
A member of the 2014 squad that ranked Top 10 in the nation and qualified for the semi-finals of the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland Championships, Murphy earned three varsity letters at Notre Dame Prep and registered double-digit points in both her senior and junior seasons. The attacker out of Reisterstown, Md. captained the JV squad as a freshman and played club lacrosse for TLC Lacrosse between 2007-15. Murphy also lettered in soccer and cross country and served as the president of the Notre Dame Prep Athletic Association, a service camp counselor, and an Organization Leadership Committee member at Notre Dame Prep. Murphy also received the Saint Joseph’s University Presidential Scholarship on Hawk Hill.
Hayley Sabol • M • Londonderry, Vt. • Burr and Burton Academy • Biology
Sabol was a two-time First-Team All-American and four-time All-State and All-Marble Valley League selection while at Burr and Burton Academy. The midfielder out of Londonderry, Vt. led her squad to a four-year record of 58-13 and reached the state semi-finals three consecutive times. Sabol also lettered in soccer and basketball at Burr and Burton Academy.
