Senior Vanessa VanderZalm and junior Meghan Cobb (Tower Hill, DE) will lead the University of Vermont women’s lacrosse team in 2016. The duo have been named team captains, head coach Jen Johnson made the announcement today.
“Vanessa and Meghan have been instrumental leaders for us both on and off of the field. With such a young team this year, their leadership capabilities will be crucial for our success,” said Johnson, who begins her 12th season on the UVM sidelines.
Cobb started all 18 games on defense for the Catamounts as a sophomore. She set new career highs in ground balls (17), caused turnovers (13) and draw controls (5) and picked up her first career goal a victory over UMass Lowell. Cobb has enters her junior campaign having played in 35 career games.
VanderZalm, who is a team captain for the second straight year, is a two regional All-American and America East All-Conference First Team selection the past two seasons. She garnered America East All-Rookie team honors in 2013.
VanderZalm ranked among the top-10 in the country in both ground balls and draw controls per contest in 2015 and led America East in caused turnovers (41). She enters her senior season ranked among the top-five all-time at Vermont in eight different categories.
The Catamounts advanced to the America East Semifinals for the third straight year and finished the season with an 11-7 record in 2015. Vermont returns five of its top six scorers from last season in 2016, as well as three players that earned America East All-Conference honors a year ago VanderZalm (first team), Courtney Cole (all-rookie) and Elena McWright (all-rookie). Vermont will add 14 newcomers to the program for the 2016 campaign.
