From Press Release
Winthrop lacrosse head coach John Sung has announced that Maggie Montanye, Shannon Gallagher, Krista Frowein and Paige Jenkins (Bayard Rustin) will serve as captains for the 2016 season.
“This is a good group that has been chosen to lead our team,” head coach John Sung said. “These four have put in many years of hard work and have proven themselves ready for this opportunity.”
Jenkins, a junior defender from Glen Mills, PA, was named to the All-Tournament Team last season. She is an important part of the Eagle defense and the team’s clearing game plan. She picked up 30 ground balls and forced 12 turnovers last season, appearing in all 21 games.
Montanye, a senior defender from Reisterstown, MD, will serve as captain for her second year. She appeared in all 21 games last year as the central leader in the defense. She picked up 33 ground balls and forced 18 turnovers last season.
Gallagher, a senior midfielder from Silver Spring, MD, has been a strong offensive presence for the Eagles for three years. A three-time First Team All-Conference selection, Gallagher totaled 73 points last season on 54 goals and 19 assists. Her quick stick was also an asset on defense as she caused 51 turnovers.
Frowein, a senior attacker from Leonardtown, MD, saw time in 15 contests last season. She notched seven goals on 16 total shots with one goal being a game-winner.
The reigning Big South Champions will open the 2016 season on the road at Jacksonville on Friday, February 19. The Eagles will open at home on Sunday, February 21 against Furman.
