Owen Caputo admitted that he was exhausted as his Team 91 Extreme and went into what amounted to a fourth overtime in the 2018 title game today vs. Prime Time (N.Y.) at the Showcase Lacrosse Philly Summer Invitational at United Sports.
So Caputo was equally relieved and happy to score the game-winner and give Team 91 a 7-6 victory.
“I was really exhausted,” said Caputo (Middle Creek, N.C.), a Duke commit who scored twice. “It was an unsettled defense and it felt right to go.”
Team 91 trailed, 3-2, at halftime, but went on a 4-1 surge to take a 6-4 lead as George Wichelnn (two goals), Caputo, Alex Bamford and Chris Nicholas each scored. Prime Time sent it into overtime on goals by Brian Calabrese (two goals) and Matthew Magnan.
The teams went through two four-minute overtimes and then when the third overtime reached four minutes the clock was halted and the teams played on until Caputo ended it.
Team 91 goalies Chili Palma (six saves in first half) and Matthew Sageder each made key stops.
“We have a lot of depth and there is no big drop,” said Caputo. “Everyone can play.”
Team 91 finished undefeated in the tourney, also claiming a 5-4 win over LI Express North in the semis.
“We played as a team and didn’t play selfish,” said Caputo. “We moved hte ball well.”
Jake Sexton also scored for Team 91 while Griffin Gelinas scored twice for Prime Time and Matt Baugher added one.
