STEPS Philadelphia girls’ Saturday HS roundup: Agnes Irwin, Haverford, Strath Haven, Springfield-D win

Agnes Irwin built a nine-goal lead and withstood a comeback attempt to defeat reigning PIAA State Champion Garnet Valley, 15-12, Saturday at the 15th annual Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival.Steps-Philly-copy1

Hannah Keating fired five goals, Laura Pansini netted four, and Kristin Burnetta contributed two goals and four assists to lead the AIS (13-1) attack. Burnetta, Kate White, and Emily Fryer helped the Owls control possession, combining for 16 draw controls. Goalie Hailey Andress made 10 saves to earn her 13th win.

Garnet Valley, 8-5, had a four-game win streak snapped. Freshman Kamryn McNeal scored four goals and Emily Mathewson added three for the Jaguars.

“I thought we played a good first half,” said AIS coach Jenny Duckenfield. “We had an extraordinary amount of fouls called against us in the second half, but the girls battled back. We are pleased to get the win, especially at this amazing event.”

Haverford High 10, Penn Charter 9, OT

Jess Lyons scored five goals, including the game-winner, and Sami Harnwell made 12 saves for the Fords.

Strath Haven 12, Abington 10

Maddy Ruffini had four goals and an assist and Jenny Rowan scored four goals to lead the Panthers.

Springfield-Delco 11, Downingtown West 10

Bailey O’Brien and Emily Santana each scored three goals to pace the Cougars.

Friends’ Central 8, Henderson 6

Sophie Macfarlane had two goals and an assist and Sophie Berger scored twice to lead the Phoenix.

Casey McCalister had four goals and an assist for the Ghosts.

Unionville 11, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy 9

Erin Garvey had four goals and Quinn Benintende three to lead the Indians.

Mikaela Watson had two goals, two assists and three draw controls while Mason Rode scored three goals for SCHA.

Methacton 13, Hill School 10

Sara Hughes and Daria Lucchesi each had three goals and an assist for the Warriors.

Bree Gorman and Makena Hanson each tallied three goals for the Blues.

Villa Maria Academy 16, Germantown Academy 12

Lauren Dunn had four goals and one assist to pace VMA.

Prezioso fired in six goals for GA.

Archbishop Carroll HS 16, Merion Mercy Academy 12

Isabelle Schmitt had six goals to pace the Patriots.

Caroline Steller had four goals and two assists for Merion Mercy.


Plymouth Whitemarsh 13, Ridley 8

Kirsten Monte led the Colonials with five goals and an assist.

Brooke Nasella had four goals for Ridley.
