Saint Joseph’s University has added Nico Capron (Canisius ’12) to the men’s lacrosse coaching staff, head coach Taylor Wray announced today.
Capron’s on-field duties will focus on mentoring SJU’s defensive personnel and face-off wing unit and coordinating SJU’s scout defense.
“We are excited to welcome Nico Capron to our coaching staff and to the SJU lacrosse family,” said Wray. “He comes highly recommended by head coach Jim Fritz at Queens University of Charlotte and by head coach Randy Mearns from Canisius. I got to know Nico back as a high school player when I was coaching down in Charlotte right after I graduated from college, and it is great to be able to work with him again now as a colleague. He was was standout defenseman in college, has played at the professional level, and is an energetic leader, and his passion for coaching is evident. We are thrilled to have him on board.”
Capron joins the Hawks’ staff after spending nine months at Queens University in Charlotte, N.C., where he served as the volunteer assistant lacrosse coach and director of lacrosse operations under the direction of Jim Fritz. Capron assisted in all facets of the program with a primary focus on the face-off unit and individual defensive player development.
Under Capron’s direction, Queens’ 2015 face-off unit posted a 61.7 win percentage, and the starting face-off specialist recorded a 67.8 win percentage en route to earning All-South Atlantic Conference Second Team and All-Tournament Team honors while setting the single-season ground ball record (134).
Capron has spent the last two years coaching StickWithUs Lacrosse, based out of Charlotte, N.C. Capron worked with all age groups, from youth (South Charlotte Cyclones) through elite high school players (Team Carolina), with a primary responsibility on defensive schemes and individual defensive work.
Capron most recently played professionally for the Charlotte Hounds of Major League Lacrosse from 2014-15. Prior to that, he played internationally in Durham, England, for Durham University’s men’s lacrosse team. Capron led his squad to the 2013 British Universities National Championship title en route to earned team MVP honors. Additionally, Capron coached the Newcastle University lacrosse team in 2013.
A four-year starting defenseman at Canisius College, Capron led the Golden Griffins to the 2012 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title.
Capron received a bachelor’s of arts degree in anthropology with a minor in psychology from Canisius in 2012 and a master’s of science degree in management from Durham University (England) in 2013.
Capron currently resides in Philadelphia and joins a program that went 11-6 in 2015, including a 6-0 regular-season conference mark to win the Northeast Conference regular-season title, and reached the 2015 Northeast Conference championship game.
