Rounding up Philly grads in D1 men’s, women’s college games: Sankey, Heim, Morrell, Wozniak, Devlin star

Joey Sankey (Penn Charter) had four goals and two assists and defenseman Austin Pifani (Abington) contributed four groundballs and two caused turnovers to spark No. 6 North Carolina to a 19-6 rout of visiting Furman Saturday in a men’s opener.

Ryan Kilpatrick (Salesianum School) added a goal and two groundballs and backup goalie Duncan Saunders (Hill School) allowed one goal and made one save in 30 minutes.

Virginia 13, Loyola 12

Matt Barrett (Malvern Prep) made eight saves in goal and Will McNamara (Haverford School) had a GB and a CT for the winning Cavaliers.

For Loyola, Matt Heim (Central Bucks East) tallied three goals in his first college game and Nikko Pontrello (St. Augustine Prep) had a goal and two assists.

Duke 16, High Point 13

Tanner Scott (Conestoga) had a goal and an assist, Jamie Ikeda (Conestoga) added two GBs, Patrick Resch (La Salle) had a GB and Greg Pelton (Malvern Prep) added a GB for the Blue Devils.

For High Point, defenseman Pat Farrell (St. Joseph’s Prep) collected three caused turnovers and a groundball. Josph Taulane (Garnet Valley) added one GB.

Boston University 18, Mercer 6

Adam Schaal (La Salle) had two goals and two assists and Ryan Hilburn (Malvern Prep) added one goal and four assists while Craig Zebrowski (Salesianum School) had a goal and two caused turnovers and LSM Greg Wozniak (Holy Ghost Prep) amassed six GBs, 3 CTs and an assist for BU.

Colgate 9, Bryant 5

Peter Donato (Radnor) had two goals for Colgate.

Shane Morrell (Episcopal Academy) had three goals and one assist along with three caused turnovers and two groundballs for Bryant in its opening-day loss. DEF Connor Dent (St. Joseph’s Prep) added five groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Johns Hopkins 16, UMBC 4

Joe Carlini (Malvern Prep) had two groundballs for the Blue Jays in their rout.

Rutgers 10, St. John’s 8

DEF Mark DiFrangia (La Salle) had a GB and a CT for St. John’s.

Michigan 16, Bellarmine 9

Dan Kinek (Emmaus) had a goal for Michigan.

Navy 21, VMI 7

T.J. Hanzsche (Malvern Prep) produced a career-high tying six points on four goals and two assists, and Gabe Voumard (St. Augustine Prep) scored once for Navy. Ryan Kelly (Central Bucks South) led a trio of Navy goalies with 3 saves.

Duke 13, Air Force 7

Keith Dreyer (Malvern Prep) scored once for Air Force while Ikeda Had a GB and CT for the Devils.

Women

UNC 17, Florida 11

Alex Moore (Allentown, NJ) had four goals, Kelly Devlin (Downingtown East) had two goals and two draw controls, Molly Hendricks (Manheim Township) had one goal, Marie McCool (Moorestown) had one goal, Margaret Corzel (Merion Mercy) had three groundballs, one draw controls and one caused turnover and Stephanie Lobb (West Chester East) had one groundball for the Tar Heels in the key victory.

Syracuse 18, Denver 10

Kelly Cross (Upper Dublin) had a goal and an assist for the Orange.

Duke 17, Elon 8

Taylor Trimble (Episcopal academy) had three goals and three assists for the Blue Devils.
