Midfielder Ara Atayan scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the WC Predators (N.Y.) to a 9-8 victory over Patriot (N.J.) Sunday in the Philly Summer Invitational 2017 championship game at United Sports.
This completed the Predators’ perfect 6-0 weekend at the tournament run by NXT’s Showcase Lacrosse. Patriot finished 5-1 in the tournament overall.
After trailing, 8-6, late in the second half, the Predators scored two straight goals to foece overtime. Shortly later, Atayan, who is committed to UNC-Chapel Hill, scored the game-winning goal, his third of the game.
“It was unreal, Matt McLaughlin gave a feed right on the money, and he just made it easy from there,” Atayan (Bronxville High School/NY) said. “We had a lot of tenacity out there, and I think that’s why we won.”
The Predators led for almost the entire first half, but Patriot came back and never trailed in the entire second half.
McLaughlin (two assists) and Davis Allen each added three goals for the Predators while Thomas Chai had two assists.
“Patriot was a great team, I give them all the credit in the world,” Atayan added. “We played a lot of great teams out here, and they took us to overtime so they’re definitely the best team we played all tournament.”
