The No. 10 Penn State women’s lacrosse team opened the 2015 season with a resounding 15-7 victory over Lehigh at Holuba Hall on Saturday. Sophomore Steph Lazo had a career-high five goals.
Penn State (1-0) used a 12-2 run spanning the two halves. Sophomore Abby Smucker contributed three goals to the cause and junior Emi Smith made 10 saves.
Six players scored goals for the Nittany Lions, five of whom found the back of the net multiple times. Lazo led all scorers with five goals, followed by Smucker who finished with three.
Seniors Tatum Coffey and Kelly Lechner and junior Jenna Mosketti each scored twice in the season opener. Senior Maggie McCormick added a goal. Ally Heavens (Garnet Valley) and Cat Layne (Villa Maria Academy) helped lead the PSU defense.
For Lehigh, Allison LaBeau had three goals and one assist, Kendall Garden had a goal and an assist and Carli Sukonik (Harriton) scored once.
The Nittany Lions trailed just once in the game, facing a 2-1 deficit at the 20:26 mark of the first half. Lazo scored the tying goal 38 seconds later, followed by the go-ahead goal with 18:46 left in the first half.
Rutgers 10, Villanova 7
Jenny Vlahos had three goals and Halley Barnes (Garnet Valley) scored twice to lead Rutgers in an opener for both teams.
Jackie Froccaro led ‘Nova with two goals and one assist, Jessica Mucci had a goal and three assist and Kelsey Denihan scored twice. Hannah Goforth (Bishop Shanahan) also had a goal for the ‘Cats.
Monmouth 10, Lafayette 3
Allison Stathius (Delran, N.J.) led all offensive players with four goals to lead Monmouth to an opening-day win.
Sophomore Kirsten Wilhelmsen (Strath Haven) tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Leopards.
