From Press Release
Penn*Lax All-Stars is a newly formed box lacrosse travel team designed to take Pennsylvania’s best field lacrosse players and expose them to premier box training and competition across the United States. Penn*Lax All-Stars, founded by National Lacrosse League veteran Steven Holmes, has a staff and program set to lead the way in PA.
Tryouts will be held this coming October and will consist of one high school and one middle school team.
Penn*Lax has adapted a program model similar to that currently followed by the hugely successful Cali*Lax All-Stars (California) and Denver Elite (Colorado), both formed by US Box Lacrosse Association (USBOXLA) founders Shaydon Santos and Matt Brown. USBOXLA is the leading governing body for Box Lacrosse in the United States and has a very well established network of elite clubs across the country.
“Shaydon and Matt developed their elite box program to work with local club and high school teams. Without interfering with these schedules, they’re able to train highly skilled players in box lacrosse and expose them to the best tournaments and competition in the world,” says Holmes.
“These teams are stacked with Division 1 talent, but their skills continue to develop with the high level instruction and skills cultivated through box lacrosse training. We’re creating the same dynamic here with Penn*Lax and will provide elite field players a unique opportunity to fully develop their game with our premier staff of coaches.”
Said USBOXLA President Shaydon Santos: “The US Box Lacrosse Association’s first concern is player safety, Box is at a precarious spot in the USA right now because everyone is racing to open up the rules and in reality there’s only a few that have ever played or even seen this game at the youth level.
“USBOXLA is committed to responsible growth because when you open up the rules without experienced coaches behind it the game suffers and it’s simply unsafe for its participants. The USBOXLA Charter members represent the very best, most accomplished Box Lacrosse players and coaches in the United States who are committed to player, referee, coach and game development.
“The personnel that coach Holmes has put together for the Penn*Lax ALL-STARS team is frankly one of the country’s finest and we look forward to challenging this elite level State ALL-STAR program for years to come.”
Penn*Lax will be a mix of professional box training and the most competitive and exciting box tournaments in North America. Holmes believes he has assembled the right staff at Penn*Lax – collectively it’s arguably the most qualified youth Box Lacrosse staff in the country.
The elite Penn*Lax staff is as follows:
Steven Holmes (Head Coach, Defensive Coach): 8 year National Lacrosse League veteran defenseman, current MLL defenseman NY Lizards. Malvern Prep Defensive Coordinator
Adam Mueller (Offensive Coach, Player Development): Current Team USA box lacrosse offensive coach, 11 year NLL veteran. 8 year NLL veteran Coach
Kevin Crowley (Offensive Coach): Current forward for the Toronto Rock of the NLL, MLL MVP in 2013 and Gold Medalist in World Games for Team Canada scoring 5 goals in final vs Team USA
Luke Wiles (Offensive/Defensive Coach) 9 year NLL veteran with the Stealth, Wings, and Bandits, 250 goal scorer and 3-time NLL All-Star
Matt McCormick (General Manager) 2x Captain at Drexel University, 3x All-Conference, Current Assistant Coach at Malvern Preparatory School
Penn*Lax tryouts will be held in October. Tryouts will be by invitation only with a recommendation system in place for interested players.
Both the high school and middle school teams will practice roughly 26 hours throughout the year. Practices and tournaments are designed to not conflict with elite team schedules.
Penn*Lax teams will represent the best in Pennsylvania at the following tournaments:
Nov 28th Fall Classic (PA)
Jan 18th NorthEast Regional (PA)
Feb 14th Midwest Classic (OH)
Aug 6th USBoxLa Nationals (CA)
Registration will not be open until June 1st. Plenty of details will follow, please stay tuned to phillylacrosse.com for tryout and registration details.
