Loyola University Maryland Head Coach Charley Toomey, the Greyhounds staff and several returning players joined 15 newcomers to the program Thursday for a welcome luncheon before the freshmen embarked on their weekend of orientation programming at the University.
Fourteen freshmen and one transfer will join the locker room when fall conditioning and practices begin next week: Bobby Austin (Ridgefield, Connecticut/McDonogh School), Damase Bagbonon (Paoli, Pennsylvania/Conestoga), Chase Bradshaw (Las Vegas, Nevada/Palo Verde), P.J. Brown (Cazenovia, New York/Cazenovia), Bryce Carrasco (Arnold, Maryland/Saint Mary’s), John Duffy (Portland, Oregon/Lincoln), Richie Easterly (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill), Sammy Edwards (Beverly Hills, California/Beverly Hills), Lucas Jackson (Westport, Connecticut/Staples), Nick Mazza (Davidsonville, Maryland/The Calverton School/Penn State), Jake Shriner (Townsend, Delaware/Caravel Academy), Pat Spencer (Davidsonville, Maryland/Boys Latin School of Maryland), Jacob Stover (Hunt Valley, Maryland/McDonogh School), Paul Volante (Ridgefield, Connecticut/Ridgefield) and Michael Wegner (Denver, Colorado/Regis Jesuit).
“It’s always a good day when we get to bring our new players into the program and welcome their families to the Loyola lacrosse family,” Toomey said. “We are looking forward to starting work on the field and in the weight room soon, and these men are going to be a part of that effort.”

Paoli, Pennsylvania • Conestoga H.S.
Before Loyola: Was a six-time letterwinner at Conestoga High School in Berwyn, Pennsylvania… Played lacrosse for the Settlers as a sophomore, junior and senior, was a football letterwinner as a sophomore and junior and wrestler as a freshman… Helped the lacrosse team win the 2012 Pennsylvania title and finish as state runners-up in 2013… The team then was its district’s runner-up and a state quarterfinalist in 2015… Was a two-time Fab 40 All-Star at the Philly Showcase and the Most Valuable Player of the 2013 Delaware All-Star Game… Played club lacrosse for Dukes Lacrosse Club and Mesa Fresh… Helped Mesa Fresh win the Inside Lacrosse Recruiting Invitational in 2015 and the 2012 Lava Lax and Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions… Led Dukes to the 2013 Lax Evolution and 2012 Crabfeast titles.
Personal: Damase Wagnilo Bagbonon… Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania… Son of Bertha Jackmon and Michel Bagbonon… Has an older brother, Bhelly, who was an All-Colonial States Athletic Conference First Team honoree in lacrosse at Immaculata University where he was also a team captain and All-Academic Team member… Was a member of Conestoga’s First Honor Roll all four years of high school.
Townsend, Delaware • Caravel Academy
Before Loyola: Earned nine varsity letters at Caravel Academy in Baer, Delaware… Picked up five letters in lacrosse and four in football as an outside linebacker and fullback… Scored 85 goals as a high school player and won 87 percent of faceoffs as a junior and senior… Also had 25 assists as a senior when he scored 29 goals… Received All-State honors as a sophomore, junior and senior from the Delaware Lacrosse Coaches Association and was a member of the Delaware All-Philly Lacrosse Team by Top Lacrosse Recruits… Two-time team captain as a junior and senior and earned the program’s Iron Man Award in 2014, as well as the Ball Hawk Award in 2013… Played club lacrosse for the Long Island Sting, the Maryland Jr. Terps and the Delaware Silverbacks… Earned Southern Exposure All-Star honors and tournament Most Valuable Player honors from the Face-Off Factory Combine in 2014… Reached the semifinals of the National Face-Off Tournament with Face-Off Academy in 2014… Helped Caravel’s football team win the 2012 and 2013 Delaware state titles, earning the program’s Play Maker Award in 2013 and the Pride Award in 2014… Member of the United States Polocross (lacrosse on a horse) World Cup team in 2015.
Personal: Thomas Jacob Shriner… Born in Townsend, Delaware… Son of Bonnie and Jeff Shriner… Intends to participate in Loyola’s ROTC program… Was a four-year member of Caravel’s honor roll and was a three-time recipient of the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association Student-Athlete Award from 2013-2015 for holding a 3.5 of higher grade-point average during the athletic season… Earned the 2014 Delaware HIgh Schools Leadership Award and was a Boys State Delegate that year… Recipient of the 2014 American Legion Good Citizen Award and was a four-year member of the Caravel Student Government and Bible Club… Plays polocrosse for Sugarloaf Mountain and Bucks County clubs… His mother, Bonnie, was an Academic All-America field hockey player at The Ohio State University where she was a team captain in 1991… Both of his parents serve as police officers.
Ridgefield, Connecticut • McDonogh School
Before Loyola: Earned six varsity letters between McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland, and St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, Virginia… Spent his last three years at McDonogh… Earned four letters in lacrosse, two in soccer… Helped McDonogh reach the MIAA ‘A’ Conference championship game in 2014 and the semifinals in 2015, and previously guided St. Christopher’s to the state semifinals and finals in separate seasons… In two years at McDonogh, scored 47 goals and had 30 assists… Tallied 43 goals and had 25 assists in two St. Christopher’s seasons… Played club lacrosse for Crabs and Green Turtle… Was on club teams that won Vail Shootout, King of the Hill, NSCLA and Crabfeast titles… Was on the McDonogh soccer team that reached the MIAA final.

Las Vegas, Nevada • Palo Verde H.S.
Before Loyola: Was a four-year varsity letterwinner in lacrosse at Palo Verde High School in Las Vegas, Nevada… Earned All-Nevada honors in 2013, 2014 and 2015… Named his team’s Most Valuable Player in 2015 and the team Offensive Player of the Year in 2013… Helped Palo Verde win the 2012 and 2015 state titles and finish second in the state in 2013… During his four-year high school career, scored 132 goals and had 41 assists for the Panthers… Also had 158 ground balls… As a senior in 2015, scored 53 goals and assisted on 16 while picking up 59 ground balls and causing 15 turnovers… Had 37 goals, 15 assists, 71 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers in 2014… Scored 33 goals and assisted on nine as a sophomore and had nine and one in his freshman campaign… Played club lacrosse for the Vegas Starz from 2012-2015, Adrenaline Tropics in 2014-2015, and he was a member of the West Coast Starz National Team from 2013-2015.

Before Loyola: Earned six letters at Cazenovia (New York) High School… Was a four-year letterwinner in lacrosse and as a junior and senior in basketball… Named to the All-Central New York team as a junior and senior and was a USLacrosse All-American as a senior… Helped Cazenovia go 79-7 over his four years with a state title in 2013 and runner-up finishes in 2014 and 2015… Was an All-League player as a junior and senior and was a team captain each of those years… Scored 234 points over his career with 49 goals and 38 assists as a senior in 2015… Tallied 63 and 30 in 2014, 22 and 20 in 2013 and seven and five as a freshman… Played club lacrosse for United Lacrosse Club and Orange Crush… Helped the Cazenovia basketball team to a league title as a senior.

Before Loyola: Was a six-time letterwinner at Saint Mary’s High School in Annapolis, Maryland, earning three each in lacrosse and football… Named to The Baltimore Sun All-Metro First Team as a senior in 2015 while also picking up MIAA ‘A’ Conference All-Star First Team and All-Anne Arundel County First Team honors by the Annapolis Capital Gazette… Led the Saints to their first MIAA ‘A’ Conference title since 1996, defeating McDonogh School in the championship match… Also named to the Maryland State Lacrosse Coaches Association All-State First Team in 2015 and was a USA Today Honorable Mention All-American… Played club lacrosse for the Annapolis Hawks (2011, 2013-14) and the Crabs (2013)… Helped the Hawks win the Gait Cup and King of the Hill titles in 2014… Earned 2013 MIAA ‘B’ Conference First Team All-Star honors in football as a junior.

Portland, Oregon • Lincoln H.S.
Before Loyola: Was a six-time letterman as a high school student-athlete at Jesuit High School (2011-13) and Lincoln High School (2013-2015) in Portland, Oregon… Earned four letters in lacrosse, two at each school and was a two-year letterwinner in football at Lincoln… Was a four-year All-Oregon player as selected by coaches in the Oregon High School Lacrosse Association (OHSLA)… Earned first team honors as a junior and senior, second team laurels as a sophomore and honorable mention as a freshman… Scored 222 goals and had 55 assists during his high school career… Tallied 51 goals and 14 assists as a freshman, 46 and 13 as a sophomore, 67 and 20 during his junior season and 58 and nine as a senior. Syracuse, New York • Westhill H.S.
Before Loyola: Earned 11 varsity letters at Westhill High School in Syracuse, New York… Earned five letters in lacrosse, four in football and two for indoor track and field… Scored 251 points in high school with 126 goals and 125 assists… Had 45 goals and 45 assists as a senior in 2015 when he was named the Central New York Player of the Year and earned USLacrosse All-America honors… Also had 32 and 25 as a junior, 26 and 26 as a sophomore, 15 and 24 as a freshman and eight and five as an eighth-grader on the varsity team… Was an All-League First Team honors as s sophomore, junior and senior and garnered second team recognition as a freshman… Played club lacrosse for United Lacrosse… Was an All-Central New York and All-League First Team honoree in football while earning All-State Third Team recognition as a senior.

Before Loyola: Earned four letters in lacrosse at Beverly Hills (California) High School where he was named the 2014 Ocean League Offensive Player of the Year… Scored 51 goals and had 20 assists as a senior in 2015… Played club lacrosse for several organizations, including the Los Angeles Lazers, Goon Alpha Elite, Vegas Starz Elite, West Coast Starz and Adrenaline Tropics… Was an Adrenaline All-American.
Personal: Samuel William Edwards… Born in Beverly Hills, California… Son of Michele and Rob Edwards… Has an older brother, Jay… Will be the first Loyola men’s lacrosse player from Southern California and the second on the roster from the Golden State (Will Fredericks, 2010-13).
Westport, Connecticut • Staples H.S.
Before Loyola: Was a four-year letterwinner in lacrosse at Staples High School in Westport, Connecticut… Earned All-State Class L Second Team honors and All-Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference Second Team recognition… Helped Staples finish as the state runners-up in 2013 and 2014… Earned the team’s Groundball Award with 68 in 2015… Also received the Block S Award that year… Played club lacrosse for the CT Chargers and Eclipse Lacrosse Club… Helped Eclipse win the FLG Tournament title… Was a News 12 Scholar-Athlete.

2015 (Sophomore at CCBC Essex): Missed eight games with an injury, but still earned NJCAA All-America Second Team honors for the Knights… Also earned All-Maryland JUCO and All-Region XX First Team recognition… Scored 17 goals and had 20 assists in 10 games… Tallied five goals and three assists against Northern Virginia C.C. (3/28).
2014 (Freshman at Penn State): Made his collegiate debut for the Nittany Lions and played in four games… Took seven shots, three on goal, and scored one goal.

Personal: Jacob Matthew Stover… Born in Round Rock, Texas… Son of Debbie and Matt Stover… Has an older sister, Jenna, who is a lacrosse player at Messiah College, and a younger brother, Joe… Was a member of McDonogh’s honor roll each of his eight terms at the school… Was a McDonogh School Senior Student Leader for the FCA Club in 2015… Father, Matt, was an All-Pro kicker and Super Bowl Champion for the Baltimore Ravens… The elder Stover played 19 years in the National Football League for the Cleveland Browns, Ravens and Indianapolis Colts… At the time of the younger Stover’s freshman year at Loyola, Matt Stover was ranked sixth all-time in the NFL with 2,004 points scored.

Before Loyola: Earned six letters at Ridgefield (Connecticut) High School… Played four years of varsity lacrosse and two of basketball… Earned All-Connecticut First Team honors as a junior and senior and second team recognition as a sophomore… Garnered All-America accolades as a senior and was a two-time All-Fairifeld County Interscholastic Athletic Conference First Team honoree (2014 and 2015)… Helped Ridgefield reach the FCIAC and State Class L title games in 2015… Played club lacrosse for Team Superstar for four years and was a Hotbeds All-Star two years in a row.

Before Loyola: Was a four-year letterwinner in lacrosse at Regis Jesuit High School in Denver, Colorado… Helped the Raiders win the 2014 state title and reach the championship game in 2015… Earned the team’s 2015 Coaches Award… Played club lacrosse for several teams — Denver Elite, Wild Lacrosse, FCA Vail Lacrosse and FCA National Team (Lake Placid)… Was a High Rollers All-Star in 2012 and helped his team to a FCA National Championship.
Personal: Michael Leonard Wegner… Born in Phoenix, Arizona… Son of Cathy and Len Wegner… Has an older brother, Brian, who plays lacrosse at the University of Denver… Became an Eagle Scout in 2014 and was named a Regis Jesuit Raider Man in 2015… Earned the Loyola Leadership Award in 2013 and 2014… Won powerlifting titles at the state and national level in high school… Will be Loyola’s first lacrosse player from the State of Colorado.
