Three goals by senior midfielder Jake Weber (Manheim Township), along with three assists from senior attack Steve Smyrl (Garnet Valley), were more than enough for Ursinus as the Bears (2-0) defeated Widener (0-3) 4-2 in men’s lacrosse play from a foggy Quick Stadium on Wednesday.

The Bears held an opponent to two goals for the second straight game, and scooped up 37 ground balls in the win.

After a scoreless first quarter, Ursinus got on the board as junior long stick midfielder Anthony Torello (Kennett) scored on an assist from Smyrl at 14:42. Chris Sanchez then scored for the Pride to tie the score at 1-all less than one minute later.

Weber would then score on a Smyrl assist at 8:44, followed by an unassisted goal at 4:25 for a 3-1 halftime lead.

Weber’s third goal of the game came at 6:54 in the third on an assist by Smyrl for a 4-1 lead. Widener would score the final goal of the game at 6:44 as Vince Marra (Springfield-Delco) cut the Ursinus lead to 4-2.

Individually, junior goalkeeper Brian Neff (Ephrata) had seven saves as he faced 20 shots. Senior defender Ryan Ridinger (Manheim Township) had four ground balls and three caused turnovers, while senior attack Mark Stratton (Manheim Township) scooped up six ground balls.

Junior faceoff specialist James Fairchild (Malvern Prep) was 7-for-10 on faceoffs for Ursinus, who will host Kenyon on Saturday in their home opener.

Chris Treat (Hasverford High) had 10 saves in goal for Widener.

Cabrini 13, Hampden-Sydney 10

Three Cavaliers scored hat tricks, as Cabrini improved to 2-1 with the win at Hampden-Sydney College. Sophomore Evan Downey paired an assist with his three goals, while senior Damian Sobieski (Avon Grove) and junior Sebastian Kerslake (Henderson) added three goals each. Freshman Tyler Morrell (Episcopal) notched 10 saves to earn the win.
