For the second time in three days, the Lower Merion boys’ lacrosse team has beaten a top-ranked team.
Paddy Black scored four goals and added an assist to lead Lower Merion to a 12-8 victory Saturday over previously-undefeated Central Bucks South in the 15th Annual Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival at Radnor.
Evan Wolf and Mike Bernicker each contributed three goals for the Aces (7-6). Aaron Jaffe, who registered two assists, won 16 of 24 face offs.
Jake Henze scored three times and Dillon Kelly added two goals for the Titans (11-1). Just two days earlier, the Aces had downed No. 4 Garnet Valley.
“This is a real nice win over an undefeated team,” Black said.
Wolf and Black each scored twice in the second quarter to help Lower Merion snap a 3-3 tie.
“We really started to play our game in the second quarter,” Aces head coach Ernie Shapiro said.
Black delivered a man-up goal late in the quarter to help his team build a 9-5 halftime lead.
Between the first and second quarters, Shapiro instructed his players to simplify their offensive approach.
“We were getting too far ahead of ourselves,” said Black, one Lower Merion’s four senior captains. “He reminded us to play each possession at a time. When we do that, everyone works really well together.”
The loss will allow C.B. South’s players to refresh their minds, according to head coach Mike Sharman.
“The pressure of an undefeated season is gone,” said Sharman, whose team leads the Suburban One Continental Conference and has a key game Monday at Central Bucks East.
With 14 seniors, the Titans’ success has been cultivated over the last four seasons under the coach.
“We’re very proud of the progress this program,” Sharman said.
