Pete Moeller scored five goals and Tate Gallagher added three goals, four assists and three groundballs today as host Shipley School defeated Oratory Prep (N.J.), 15-5, in the Nike Checking for Cancer Invitational.

The game was one of three games (including two girls’ games) played at Shipley School. Games also were played at Haverford School and Agnes Irwin.

Also for the 8-0 Gators, Nick Yi had two goals and four groundballs, Amir Fluellen contributed two goals, an assist and three groundballs and Chris Verdeur had an assist, seven groundballs and two take aways. Ian Walsh made 10 saves in goal.

“It’s a great event and we’re very very happy to host it,” said Fluellen, a junior midfielder/attackman. “We take great pride on having it on our field and that’s why we have so many people out here supporting.”

Fluellen said Shipley’s strong start us due to good coaching and good discipline.

“Everyone’s doing their job and that’s what the coaches are stressing,” he said. “We’re all staying focused and pretty much doing what we need to do to play as best as we can.

“Everyone was working hard and going very very very hard. It’s very respectable that everyone here doesn’t worry about themselves. Everyone is unselfish and we’re just playing as hard as we can.”

Shipley has a big week. The Gators host Cardinal O’Hara Tuesday and then play Wednesday at deefnding Friends School League champion Academy of the New Church before playing Saturday at Inter-Ac League member Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.

Penn Charter 7, Chatham (NJ) 6

Cody Sweeney scored five goals and Gavin Tygh won 10 of 17 face-offs to lead the Quakers to the win.

Drew Gallant and Luke Stansfield also scored for Penn Charter.
