Four-time defending PAC-10 boys lacrosse champion Spring-Ford fired the first salvo in its storied rivalry with host Owen J. Roberts Friday night.
With Kevin Todd (one assist) and Jake Hvazda firing home two goals apiece and Chris Morgan making a game-clinching save at crunch time, the Rams (2-0 league, 2-0 overall) posted a narrow 8-7 triumph over the Wildcats (1-1, 1-1), who have met S-F in each of the PAC-10’s eight championship finals.
The cushion came when Todd, who had four goals in a season-opening 19-0 romp over Pottsgrove Tuesday night, gave Spring-Ford an 8-6 lead at the 3:16 mark of the fourth quarter off an assist from Danny Cassidy.
After OJR drew within 8-7 on Austin Delgatto’s third goal, Morgan sealed the deal by denying Sam Garges (3 goals, 2 assists) from point-blank range in the closing moments. It was one of 12 saves on the night for Morgan.
Todd also scored in the third quarter to snap a 3-3 halftime tie and give the Rams a lead they would never relinquish.
