Grant Ament scored the game-winner with 12 seconds to play on a man-up situation as host Haverford School defeated IMG National, 11-10, today in a boys’ lacrosse game that was as physical as it was exciting.
The Fords (6-0), ranked No. 1 by Phillylacrosse.com and in North America by the Epoch Lacrosse Rankings, was trailing, 9-8, entering the final period.
Forry Smith (four goals, one assist) tied it off a Dox Aitken (one goal, two assists) feed and Smith then put his team ahead off a dish from Ament (one goal, two assists). IMG tied it with 2:26 to play on a man-up situation, but junior Aitken drew a penalty and with 18 seconds to play, Haverford called time and set up the play for Ament.
“I have to give a lot of the credit to Dox,” said Ament. “He drew the penalty to get us into that situation.
“As for the play, Coach (Mark) Petrone told us exactly what to do and we just listened to him. It couldn’t have run more to script. Forry found me inside and I just took the shot from about 3 yards out. I was just in the right place at the right time.”
Drew Supinski added two goals for Haverford and goalie Alex deMarco made eight saves.
IMG – which is fielding a team of upperclassmen and post graduates and plays a box-type hybrid field game – is 2-2 with one of its wins over No. 3 McDonogh School (MD).
Tehoka Nanticoke-Hill and Robert Hudson each scored three goals while Foster Cuomo scored twice and Ben French had a goal and an assist. Max Smith posted 12 saves.
