The host Villanova women’s lacrosse team improved to 3-4 after a stellar 13-9 victory Wednesday night over the St. Joseph’s Hawks (4-3). The Wildcats jumped out quick posting three goals within the first five minutes and never trailed in their commanding Wednesday night win.
Freshman Kathleen O’Connor posted the first goal of the game off a pass from senior Jessica Mucci. The Wildcats would score three goals within a minute-thirty to set the ton for the half.
Junior Meghan Breen found her first goal of the game in a St Joseph’s turnover scramble for a quick draw control and goal while sophomore Carolyn Dottino posted Wildcat goal number three off a breakaway, one-on-one situation with the St. Joseph’s goalkeeper Nora McGeever (Archbishop Carroll).
The two teams traded goals but the Hawks were unable to make up the deficit as the `Cats sent the Hawks into the locker room with a commanding 8-4 lead.
Villanova dominated the first half posting better numbers than the Hawks in shots (16 to seven), ground balls (10 to five), draw controls (10 to four) and only posted eight turnovers compared to the Hawks nine.
The Hawks came into the second half with a vengeance posting the first goal of the second period off a free position shot in the first three minutes. After not a single free position shot in the first half, the second half was full of them with four goals scored off free position shots.
After trading goals to bring the score within two (10-8) the Hawks would come the closest to tying the score the entire game with 12:26 remaining on the clock. However, the Wildcats would return the favor posting three goals, two off free position, and one unassisted goal from Mucci.
The senior came one point short her season high six points after posting two goals and three assists to lead the game in points earned.
Breen and Denihan led the Wildcats on the offensive front as each player posted three goals with one goal off a free position shot. Breen also posted an assist.
Dana garbinski led the Hawks with three goals and Julia Falcone (West Chester East) had two goals and an assist while Aly Gormley (Springfield-Delco) had a goal and an assist and Nora McCallion (Notre Dame Academy) had a goal and an assist,
The Villanova victory however did not come off of efficient scoring alone; the Wildcats controlled the field of play for much of the game with Froccaro and O’Connor each putting five draw controls on their stat line. Junior Sam Scarfogliero and sophomore Mariah Salerno each added three caused turnovers, while nine different Wildcats causing at least one turnover during the game.
Junior Jaclyn Fraum and freshman Julia Roberts split duties between the posts with two and one save, respectively.
