Tory Bensen and Nina Corcoran each scored three goals and adding an assist as visiting Penn improved to 4-0 overall this season by downing Brown, 9-7, in the Ivy League. Lindsey Smith (Unionville) added two goals for the Quakers while Iris Williamson (Germantown Friends) had one.
Penn, ranked No. 13 in the country, needed every one of Lucy Ferguson’s eight saves to maintain its lead. Ferguson made six saves in the first half, and came up with two down the stretch to stave off Brown’s rally.
Alyssa DiBona (Archbishop Carroll) had five draw control and a caused turnover for Brown (3-1).
The Quakers trailed quickly in the game, Brown’s Yuna Hur depositing a rebound off a Ferguson save just 38 seconds into the game.
The lead did not last long for Brown, though, as Penn scored three goals in the next eight minutes to take a 3-1 lead. Corcoran had two of the goals, sandwiched around a Bensen marker.
Neither team scored for the next six minutes until Smith scored a man-up goal off a Bensen assist with 15:37 left in the first half. The goal came moments after Corcoran picked off a pass and caused a Brown turnover.
Just under a minute later, another Penn caused turnover led to a Red and Blue goal as Megan Kelly caused a turnover and sent Penn in transition. Moments later, Bensen took a Corcoran pass and scored her second of the game to give the Quakers a 5-1 lead.
The lead became 6-1 for the Quakers with a Williamson goal just before halftime. Again, Corcoran caused a Brown turnover and Williamson broke in alone for a goal with 26 seconds left in the half.
The Bears scored the first two goals of the second half, cutting into Penn’s lead with 25:37 to play. The Red and Blue answered quickly with Corcoran’s third of the game following a Natalie Stefan draw control win. Lindsey Smith would score a free position goal five minutes later to regain a five-goal lead for the Quakers.
Brown again had a rally, Hur and Jamie Gion scoring the next two goals to once again render Penn’s lead to three. Tory Bensen squashed that momentum, though, with a free position goal on the man-up with 11:27 to play.
Brown would add a goal with five minutes to play and another with 10 seconds left to make the final score 9-7 in favor of the Quakers. Ferguson made her two second-half saves in the final minute of the game, keeping the Bears from any true semblance of a comeback.
Penn had to overcome a decided disadvantage on the draw for the first time this season as Brown won 13 of 18 draw controls. The Quakers evened out the possession numbers with eight caused turnovers, led by Corcoran who had three and two each from Bensen and Meg Markham. Brown had 15 total turnovers in the game.
