From Press Release
Following a dominant performance in a 15-9 win over the Vancouver Stealth last weekend, the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) look to continue their winning streak this weekend with back-to-back games when they visit Toronto at the Air Canada Centre on Friday, February 7 at 7:30 p.m. and return home to host the undefeated Edmonton Rush at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday, February 8 at 7:30 p.m.
The Wings will play their first of three match-ups this season against fellow NLL East Division affiliate Toronto Rock. Philadelphia won the season series during 2013; defeating the Rock in two of their three contests against each other.
Wings’ Forwards Pat Buchanan and Roger Vyse will be playing with added incentive, having spent parts of their careers with Toronto. Philadelphia will be looking to another group of Forwards in Jordan Hall and Kyle Buchanan to continue their steady offensive production. Both rank in the top 10 in the league for points, goals and assists. Combined they account for 30 of the team’s 77 goals and 71 of the team’s 205 points.
“A game within the division is always big for us,” said Head Coach Blane Harrison. “All of the teams are fighting for one of the three coveted playoff spots. Toronto is a tough veteran team. This will be a physical match-up to say the least.”
Looking ahead to Saturday’s home contest against Edmonton, the Wings will try to hand the Rush their first loss of the 2014 campaign. This will be the first and only time Philadelphia and Edmonton meet in the regular season. These teams have not played against one another since the 2012 season when they split their head-to-head series (1-1).
“Saturday will be a big test for us,” said Harrison. “We will be coming off our final set of back-to-back games and play the best team [statistically] in the league this year.”
Edmonton has seven players with double-digit points scored one-third of the way through their season. Forward Mark Matthews leads the team with 12 goals and 16 assists (28 points).
The Wings will honor former player and second all-time leading scorer Jake Bergey by retiring his No. 66 jersey prior to the start of the Wings vs. Edmonton Rush game. Bergey will be on-hand for the pre-game ceremony where his #66 banner will be unveiled in the rafters alongside fellow Wings’ greats Tom Marechek (#42) and Dallas Eliuk (#35).
“It is always nice to honor members who have been a part of our team’s heritage,” said Harrison. “We are happy for Jake and the fans to be involved in such a memorable occasion.”
The Wings travel to Buffalo for their final face-off in the regular season against the Bandits. Philadelphia visits the First Niagara Center on Saturday, February 15 at 7:30 p.m.
