The Care for the Cure Foundation’s 6th Annual Care for the Cure Lacrosse Tournament, and the 2nd Annual Kelsey Klassic on Oct. 25 at Henderson High School. The event will host boys and girls high school lacrosse players, along with a men’s 18+ bracket to compete for a greater cause. The Care for the Cure Foundaiton is a 100% volunteer based company whose mission is to raise awareness and funds for like minded non-profit organizations. This year’s tournament has been moved into October as November is a crucial recruiting time for high school lacrosse athletes.
The Care for the Cure Lacrosse Tournament was inspired by Caroline ‘Gallagher’ Cranston who lost her life in a battle with Leukemia in May, 2010. Care was a standout student-athlete playing soccer, and lacrosse for West Chester Henderson. After exceeding all expectations at Henderson, Caroline went on to play lacrosse at Duquesne University, where she was a leader on and off the field. Caroline graduated Duquesne with her Masters Degree while also competing as a 4 year player on the lacrosse team. A true inspiration and light within the lacrosse community, The Care for the Cure Foundation will continue to spread awareness in her honor. All proceeds from the tournament will be donated between the Caroline Gallagher Cranston Memorial Fund, the Headstrong Foundation, Kelsey’s Legacy, and another yet to be announced non-profit. Accompanying the Care for the Cure’s lacrosse tournament will be the 2nd Annual Kelsey Klassic. Celebrating the life of Kelsey Kramer, the men’s teams will compete in three, fifty minute games, raising money for Kelsey’s Legacy. All in attendance at the Care for the Cure Lacrosse Tournament will enjoy great lacrosse, food, and live entertainment. Kelsey was a junior at Owen J. Roberts High School when her life tragically ended in a single car accident at the age of 16. She was an honor student and an active athlete. Kelsey loved the sport of lacrosse and she had a strong connection because of her friends who played. Kelsey had hoped to be the lacrosse manager for Owen J. Roberts her junior and senior year.

Maplezone Sports Institute fall lacrosse indoor league at MSI Fieldhouse (October-November). The league will encompass weekly 5v5 games (goalie and 4 field players- all short sticks) and will also provide each team with 30 minutes of practice (turf-time) prior to their weekly game. This is a great opportunity to guarantee training time in a weather proof environment, allowing the ability to practice and compete in the same time frame with no rainouts! The league is designed for a hybrid style of play, combining box and field skills, allowing for a high volume of touches, and forcing players to move their feet on defense and dodge hard on offense. Standard 6×6 goals, play the ball off all hard surfaces and no breakaways with 2 pass rule in the offensive end. (CLICK HERE TO VIEW RULES)
This league is faceoff friendly! There will be a faceoff after every goal as well as to start the game and to begin the 2nd half. This will allow faceoff athletes a chance to compete at the X while continuing to develop their offensive and defensive skills. We have met with the referee assignor to review and implement specific rules/infractions regarding take out checks, helmet-helmet contact and slashing. Penalties will be assessed accordingly for general lacrosse infractions, combining ice-hockey standards for misconduct/ejections. Player safety is the primary concern to enhance training and competition.

Golf Outing
The 2014 PLA Golf Outing, Monday, October 13th at Bidermann Golf Club in Wilmington, Delaware, part of the Vicmead Hunt Club. The event will support the PLA’s mission to promote the game of lacrosse in the Greater Philadelphia region, particularly its New Start Program, which provides technical and financial assistance to new lacrosse programs. The PLA has provided close to $375,000 in grant support to new lacrosse programs in the area since the outing’s inception in 1993. Last year’s PLA Golf Classic at Bidermann featured 100 golfers and over 50 individual and corporate sponsors and raised $21,200. The proceeds enabled the PLA to continue its support of the PIAA Public Lacrosse League and youth and middle programs in Philadelphia. Golf Classic proceeds also helped the PLA conduct high school and youth coaches’ clinics, sponsor area charitable tournaments that keep Philadelphia lacrosse in the spotlight (including the Katie Samson Tournament, the Nick Colleluori Classic, Checking for Cancer and EvanFest). Proceeds also enabled the PLA to organize and underwrite the 1st Annual PLA High School Awards Recognition Banquet at the Radnor Hotel, which featured over 200 attendees and brought both the boys’ and girls’ games together for the first time in an effort to recognize elite high school lacrosse players and others who made their mark on the 2014 high school lacrosse season. Funds from the outing will also help the PLA induct the Class of 2015 into the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame at Whitemarsh Country Club in February. The PLA is excited that Vicmead Hunt Club and Bidermann will again host the event. The club, the course and the staff received rave reviews from everyone who played or attended the event in October 2013. Originally the 9-hole private course of Henry Francis du Pont at his Winterthur estate, Bidermann was enlarged, redesigned and established as a private club in 1965 (it later merged with Vicmead). Today, the course offers a traditional style parkland layout with native grasslands separating each golf hole. It is an enjoyable, yet challenging, golf course surrounded by unparalleled scenic beauty and the serenity of the Brandywine Valley. The PLA is particularly looking for sponsors for the event. Among other things, all sponsors, patrons and (if applicable) their logos (and websites) will be promoted in press releases and on the new PLA website. For more information regarding the event and its ever festive format, please visit the event website — www.plagolfouting.com. Please reserve your spot in the outing by registering for the event as soon as possible, but in any event before Monday, October 6th. If you are not a golfer or cannot attend the golfing activities, you are welcome to attend the cocktail reception and banquet that begins at 5:30 pm. Space in the outing is limited and registrations will be processed on a first come, first served basis. Based on last year’s participation and advanced expressions of interest, we expect the outing to sell out quickly.
