MECHANICSBURG – Will Manganiello collected five goals and an assist to lead Penncrest to a 15-10 victory today over Mt. Lebanon in the PIAA boys’ lacrosse semifinals at Cumberland Valley.
The win advances the Lions (24-1) into Saturday’s championship game vs. District 1 champion Avon Grove at HersheyPark Stadium.
Penncrest led only, 3-2, after one period after falling behind, 2-1. But the Lions erupted for six goals in the second period and led, 9-4, at halftime before stretching the lead to 15-5.
Mt. Lebanon (14-10) scored the final five goals after Penncrest removed many of its regulars.
Alex Bonnett had three goals and three assists and Robert Logan added three goals and an assist for Penncrest while Drew Hanna had two goals and four assists.
“We just have an electric offense,” said Penncrest defender Matt Young, who got in on the act with his first goal of the season. “Get some energy in them, and they put up numbers. And that’s what happened.”
The energy was provided by Dylan Protesto’s 17-for-21 day at the “X”. From there, Manganiello, Hanna and Bonnett took over.
“It definitely feels good,” Hanna said. “We’re going to enjoy our two and a half hour ride back home. I don’t know if we played our type of game. The energy wasn’t there at all points, but we got out of there with the win, and that was important.”
Penncrest has made it to the state finals in its first state playoff appearance.
“It’s unbelievable,” Young said. “No words to describe it. Never felt anything like it. Once we got rolling, I knew it was coming. And we’re finally here. It feels great.”
