The rubber match for the men’s tourney in the three-game Taglit-Birthright trip will be held today in Ashkelon’s New Municipal Stadium in Ashkelon, Israel with a strong Philly presence.
The Israel Lacrosse Association is holding the three-game men and women’s exhibition tour, which pits the Israel men’s and women’s national teams against all-star squads of American college players, who will be touring the country.
See below for rosters (Philly players boldfaced).
The showcase tour, which beganw with games on June 19, was developed under a unique partnership with Amazing Israel (www.amazingisrael.com) to offer the “Amazing Israel Lacrosse program”, a 10-day unique Taglit-Birthright trip. In addition to touring the country, participants will teach the sport to young Israeli athletes, train, and compete in exhibition games against the Israel men’s and women’s national teams.
The Birthright/USA men’s team prevailed, 15-14, in the second game on Friday despite six goals and three assists by Israel’s Matt Cherry (Radnor High, Dickinson). Cherry also had two goals and one assist in Thursday’s opening-day 10-8 win.
For the women, Ursinus’ Jayme Verman (five goals, one assist) paced the Birthright/USA All-Stars to a 15-10 win at Moshe Sharet School in Ramla on Friday to complete a two-game sweep. For Israel, Jess Schwab (Harriton) had three goals. In the opener, the Birthright/USA won, 10-9 as Verman had six goals. Schwab led Israel with two goals.
The 10-day trip was limited to 20 men and 20 women who are either active players or recent graduates of a college lacrosse program. The trip is specifically geared for players to experience all Israel has to offer, through the lessons learned in lacrosse, and while promoting the grassroots development of lacrosse throughout Israel. The trip will use lacrosse as a platform to educate, engage and energize various Israeli communities while gaining a better understanding of what Israel and the region have to offer in sport.
The final games in Ashkelon are the main event of a full day of lacrosse-related activities in Ashkelon, which include visits to promote the sport at Nofiam Bet School, North Star School, and Omanuote School, as well as several special guest speakers, and a U-15 match featuring top Israeli youth squads from Ashkelon LC and Tel Aviv LC.
Taglit-Birthright Israel is a not-for-profit educational organization that sponsors free ten-day heritage trips to Israel for Jewish young adults, aged 18-26. Taglit is the Hebrew word for discovery. During their trip, participants, most of whom are visiting Israel for the first time, are encouraged to discover new meaning in their personal Jewish identity and connection to Jewish history and culture.
