Freshman goalie Matt Barrett (Malvern Prep) made eight saves to earn the win in his college debut as host Virginia edged Loyola, 14-13, in overtime today in a men’s lacrosse season opener.

James Pannell scored the game-winner after Loyola erupted and rallied from a 12-4 fourth-period deficit.

Joe Lisicky (Unionville) had five groundballs and a caused turnover for Virginia in his Division I debut. Lisicky had missed nearly all of the 2013 season for Lynchburg after being named Division III Preseason Player of the Year and is playing for the Cavs as a fifth-year senior. Also for Virginia, Bobby Hill (Malvern Prep) had two groundballs and a caused turnover.

Nikko Pontrello (St. Augustine Prep) had two goals, an assist and five groundballs for the Greyhounds.
