Villanova Men’s Lacrosse has announced their schedule for the upcoming 2015 season. The spring slate includes seven home games, five contests against 2014 NCAA tournament teams and eight squads that were ranked or receiving votes in the USILA Coaches Poll at the conclusion of 2014.
Following the culmination of the regular season, the Wildcats will once again host the BIG EAST Men’s Lacrosse Championship for the fourth-straight year on Thursday, April 30th and Saturday, May 2nd at Villanova Stadium to begin their 2015 postseason.
The Wildcats start 2015 with a strong out of conference slate beginning with Johns Hopkins on Saturday, February 14th at Villanova Stadium. The two squads renewed their rivalry last year and the Blue Jays made it to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament before falling to eventual champions Duke to end their season.
Matchups at home against Penn State and Delaware on February 21st and February 28th round out the home slate of Villanova’s February schedule while the Wildcats will take on cross-city rival Drexel on Tuesday, February 24th in Philadelphia, Pa. The Dragons made the NCAA Tournament for the first time last season and advanced to the quarterfinals while Penn State was receiving votes in the polls at the end of the 2014 season.
The month of March will be a busy one for the Wildcats with five games in a span of 21 days, including two away matches and three home contests. On Saturday, March 7th Villanova makes the short trek to face longtime rival Penn during the university’s spring break. The Quakers were also a quarterfinal NCAA team last season and narrowly defeated the Wildcats 12-11 at Villanova in 2014. A contest against Fairfield marks the second March road trip as the Stags return to the Villanova schedule for the first time since 2011. The Wildcats will host two final non-conference home games against Lehigh and Maryland on March 10th and 14th before entering BIG EAST play on March 28th at home against Marquette.
BIG EAST action dominates April with the second conference contest of the year scheduled at Denver on Friday, April 3rd. The Wildcats met the Pioneers twice last season with Villanova falling to Denver during the regular season 9-8 in overtime and meeting for the BIG EAST Championship which resulted in a 14-7 loss for the conference title.
Georgetown dots the schedule on Saturday, April 11th in Washington, D.C. while the final regular season home game of the year will take place on Saturday, April 18th against St. John’s in Villanova Stadium. Villanova concludes the regular season at Providence on Saturday, April 25th for their last tune up before the BIG EAST Tournament.
Villanova has once again earned the honor of hosting the BIG EAST Tournament on Thursday, April 30th and Saturday, May 2nd. The conference tournament will include the top four teams in BIG EAST regular season round-robin competition with the winner claiming the all-important NCAA automatic bid to the 16-team post-season tournament.
The Wildcats are coming off a 6-10 overall record and 3-3 BIG EAST slate in 2014. The 2015 squad returns 28 letterwinners including 2014 All-BIG EAST Second Team honorees Jack Curran (Fair Haven, N.J.) and Dan Willis (Moorestown, N.J.).
