Eric Warden (Garnet Valley) had five goals and an assist and Fairfield’s offensive attack was too much for the University of Delaware Saturday afternoon as the Blue Hens dropped an 18-8 decision in men’s lacrosse action at snowy Delaware Stadium.

Fairfield (1-0), which will join Delaware in the Colonial Athletic Association next season, also got five goals from Tristan Sperry and two goals each from three other players on the way to the victory.

Delaware (1-2) lost it second straight game despite getting two goals each from Dan Keane and Paul Major (Spring-Ford) and a dominating effort on faceoffs from Tyler Barbarich, who won 15 out of 22 draws. Barbarich also added an assist while Major’s goals were the first of his young career.

The game was played in chilly temperatures that dropped into the low 30s with wind chills into the 20s. A light snow fell and whipped throughout the stadium for much of the game.

“This was a disappointing day,” said Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw. “We didn’t play up to our capabilities defensively and when we did get stops, offensively we turned it over too many times.

“We had a good week of preparation but we didn’t come out and play our best. We did have a couple of phases of the game we did well and we were especially pleased with Tyler Barbarich. He started slow but ended up dominating on faceoffs and getting us a couple of extra possessions.”

After Major gave Delaware a 1-0 lead just 1:13 into the game, Fairfield answered with four straight goals in a span of three minutes to take the lead for good. The Stags led 8-4 at the half and then outscored Delaware 6-2 over the first 18 minutes of the second half to take an insurmountable 14-6 lead.

Fairfield, which was playing its season opener, scored on 18 of its 34 shots on the day against a Delaware defense that entered the game having allowed just nine total goals during its first two games. The Stags committed just 10 turnovers while forcing 14 by Delaware.

Brian Kormondy and Connor McRoy both added a goal and an assist for Delaware while Jackson Finigan scored his first career goal and Tom Holland netted his second goal of the season.

Delaware will return to action next Saturday when the Hens host Mt. St. Mary’s at 1 p.m. at Delaware Stadium.
