From Press Release
Led by a career-high five-goal effort from sophomore attackman Matt Blasco (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) the Saint Joseph’s men’s lacrosse team picked up its second consecutive victory with an 11-6 win over host Monmouth on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Hawks improve to 3-2 overall and 2-1 on the road.
Blasco fired off the first three goals of the game and added the first tally of the second period as SJU jumped out to a 8-0 run that spanned the first 20:39 of action.
Monmouth (0-3) then got on the board with three consecutive goals in the final 9:11 of the second period to close the home team’s deficit to five, 8-3, heading into halftime.
At the half, Saint Joseph’s owned advantages in shots (23-8), ground balls (15-4) and face-off opportunities as the Hawks earned eight of 12 first-half possessions.
Freshman Danny Manning (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) went 6-of-8 from the X to spark SJU’s first-half offensive dominance. SJU also converted on its pair of EMOs and held Monmouth scoreless in its one attempt.
Up by five goals entering the third period, SJU went on a 3-0 run that extended the Hawks’ lead by eight, 11-3, heading into the final 15:00.
Monmouth would tally the game’s final three goals throughout the fourth period to move to within a five-goal differential, 11-6, but time would expire as SJU would lock down the win.
Monmouth got a goal and an assist from Eric Berger (Penn Charter) and a goal from Chris Daly (Lower Merion). Losing goalie Nick Hreshko (La Salle) made six saves and allowed eight goals.
For the game, SJU dominated in shots (43-22) and ground balls (32-16) and won 13 of 20 possessions from the face-off. Blasco (5G) and redshirt junior attackman Ryan McGee (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) (2G) led six different Hawks in scoring. The duo combined for 13 shots on goal in 18 attempts. Junior midfielder Mike Dougherty (Malvern Prep) netted a goal and dished out a team-high two assists on the day. With his three-point effort, Dougherty extends his point-scoring streak to eight consecutive games, dating back to April 13 of last season.
A pair of defensemen also contributed on the offensive end of the field. Sophomore John Winchell (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) scored his first collegiate goal at the 10:57 mark of the second period and junior Will Farrell (St. Joseph’s Prep) dished out his first collegiate assist just nine seconds into the third period.
On the defensive end, Manning recorded a team-high six ground balls and went .818 (9-of-11) from the X. Senior midfielder Will Abbott (Chevy Chase, Md./Bullis School) won four of eight opportunities from the face-off.
In his first full-game effort of the season, junior goalkeeper Dustin Keen (Downingtown West) made six saves in a full 60:00. The Monmouth offense attempted to challenge Keen right away as MU earned the first possession of the game with a win at the faceoff and fired off two shots on goal in that opening possession. Keen made the pair of saves at the 14:46 and 13:32 marks to keep the home Hawks off the scoreboard.
