From Press Release
Head coach Joe Amplo has announced that Liam Byrnes, B.J. Grill, K.C. Kennedy, Jacob Richard (Henderson), Travis Schelhorn and Kyle Whitlow will serve as the 2015 team captains for the Marquette University men’s lacrosse program, as elected by their teammates.
“I’m most proud that five of our six captains are from the group of guys who were here from the beginning,” Amplo said. “They came in that first year and didn’t participate in any games but built this program and that is shown in their impact. All the captains have different leadership styles and that is the neatest thing about this bunch. Each of them brings different value and impact to this team.”
Richard led Marquette with 47 ground balls in 2014 and has appeared in all 29 games during his career.
“Jake Richard is the lone captain who hasn’t been here for four years but has quickly proved his worth to our team as a leader from the moment he got on campus,” Amplo said. “He stands for everything this program wants to be about and does things the right way.”
Byrnes, Grill, Kennedy, Schelhorn and Whitlow have all been at Marquette since 2012, with Richard the lone player in the group to arrive in 2013.
“You have guys like B.J., Kyle and Liam who have proven that they are our leaders on the field and guys like Travis Schelhorn, who you won’t see on game day a lot, but his value is the most impactful on this team. K.C. Kennedy is a consummate teammate and loves this program. Without guys like Travis and K.C., this organization is nothing,” Amplo said.
Grill is Marquette’s lone returning unanimous All-BIG EAST Conference First Team selection from a year ago and has started 28 of MU’s 29 games in program history. He finished 2014 with 37 ground balls and caused 16 turnovers as a redshirt sophomore while shutting down some of the country’s top attackmen.
Byrnes and Whitlow were each named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team in 2014 and each ranks among MU’s leaders through its first two seasons of competition. Byrnes posted 46 ground balls and 25 caused turnovers last season and leads MU with 106 and 43, respectively, through the program’s first two years. Whitlow was MU’s second-leading scorer in 2014 with 33 points on 23 goals and 10 assists and is second only to graduated USILA All-American Tyler Melnyk in career goals at MU.
Kennedy was the third-leading faceoff man for the Golden Eagles in 2014, converting on 25 of 54 opportunities, but led the squad with a percentage of .462. Schelhorn appeared in a pair of contests last season.
All six captains will still have one year of eligibility remaining following the conclusion of the 2015 season.
The Golden Eagles are coming off a 6-10 campaign (4-2 BIG EAST) in which they made the program’s first appearance in the BIG EAST tournament semifinals after placing second in the league’s regular season standings to 2015 preseason No. 1 Denver. They open the exhibition portion of the 2015 schedule on Saturday, Jan. 24 against High Point in Charlotte, North Carolina.
