From Press Release
After four historic seasons (2011-2014) with the Chestnut Hill College men’s lacrosse team, Michael Melnychenko ’14 (St. Catharines, Ontario) will continue his career at the professional level.
The Griffins’ all-time leader in nearly every offensive category and now the first to be drafted into a professional league, Melnychenko was selected by the Buffalo Bandits with the 49th overall pick (sixth round) in the 2014 National Lacrosse League (NLL) Draft at Toronto Rock Athletic Centre on Monday, September 22.
The prolific attack finished his remarkable collegiate career as the program’s all-time leader in points (205), points-per-game (3.80 PPG), goals (154), goals-per-game (2.85 GPG), assists (51), shots attempted (351), shots-per-game (6.50), man-up goals (26), and games started (54), while ranking fourth in ground balls (124) and tying for fifth in caused turnovers (29).
“Mike Melnychenko was one of the best offensive players I have ever coached,” said Chestnut Hill coach Brian Dougherty. “There is no doubt in my mind that he will succeed at the next level. He is a flat out goal scorer and there aren’t a lot of those guys out there. I am excited to watch him continue his career in the pros and we are very proud here at Chestnut Hill College.”
Melnychenko joined the fledgling Chestnut Hill College men’s lacrosse team for the 2011 season, one year after the program’s founding, and wasted little time establishing himself as a rare talent. As a freshman (2011), Melnychenko poured in 50 goals en route to being crowned the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Goals-per-Game Champion with 3.57 GPG. At season’s end, he was named the East Coast Conference (ECC) Rookie of the Year and earned an Honorable Mention to the All-ECC team with 57 points and a .532 shooting percentage. Melnychenko returned to the All-ECC roster as a Second Team honoree in his sophomore season, when he was the conference’s third-leading scorer with a team-high 36 goals and added 12 assists to rank fourth in the league with 48 points. He also earned two mentions on the ECC Weekly Honor Roll (5/2 and 5/8).
A 2013 Face-Off Yearbook DII Preseason All-American, Melnychenko surpassed the 100-goal milestone as a junior (March 23, 2013) and continued to perform as one of the league’s top playmakers with an All-ECC Second Team selection. He totaled 43 points (25 goals and 18 assists) to go along with 28 ground balls and four caused turnovers, and was recognized as the ECC Player of the Week on March 25 and a member of the ECC Weekly Honor Roll the week prior (3/18/13). Melnychenko was named the team’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) at season’s end.
As a senior (2014), Melnychenko earned a selection to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) 2014 Division II All-America Second Team to go along with All-ECC First Team status after finishing the season with 43 goals, 14 assists, 34 ground balls, and 11 caused turnovers, ranking him among the top-15 in the ECC in seven statistical categories; goals (43, 3rd), assists (14, T15th), points (57, 6th), man-up goals (11, 2nd), shots (100, 9th), shooting percentage (43-of-100, 43.0%, 14th), and shots-on-goal (71, 6th). A late addition to the Association (USILA)/LaxWorld 2014 Division I & Division II Senior South roster, Melnychenko earned the senior all-star contest’s MVP award after delivering four goals and an assist the South’s 17-16 victory on May 28, 2014. Nearly four months later, he heard his name called in the NLL Draft.
