From Press Release

The Hofstra Men’s Lacrosse team wraps up their fall competitions this Saturday when the Pride compete in the HEADstrong Foundation’s Eighth Annual Nicholas Colleluori Classic (NCC) at Ridley High School.

Hofstra will be one of six Division I colleges and 13 colleges overall participating in the two-day (Oct. 11-12) event. The Pride will play the University of Hartford at 11:30 a.m. and Binghamton University at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Other Division I schools competing on Saturday include Bellarmine, Monmouth and Syracuse. Division II and III schools, Chestnut Hill, Dowling, Merchant Marine Academy, Marymount, Neumann, Rosemont and Stockton will compete on Sunday, October 12.headstrong-logo-squarer

Hofstra, with 25 lettermen including five starters returning in 2015, is coming off a Goodwill scrimmage against the touring team from Keio University of Tokyo, Japan at James M. Shuart Stadium on October 3. The spirited scrimmage was more about friendship and helping the sport grow in Japan than it was about the result. But the focus is on the NCC for the Pride this week. Shortly after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a blood cancer affecting the lymphatic system, Nick Colleluori, the former Hofstra and Ridley lacrosse player, created the HEADstrong Foundation to raise awareness for blood cancer and help others afflicted by the disease. Nick Colleluori passed away on November 28, 2006 after a relentless 14-month battle with cancer. But his legacy will live forever.

The NCC combines the elements of a non-traditional collegiate lacrosse tournament with a fall festival including a vendor village. But the primary purpose of the event is to remember Nick and raise funds to support the essential programs and services provided by the HEADstrong Foundation™ to improve quality of life for those affected by blood cancers. The event has become a fall tradition in the sport of lacrosse and has raised over $1.5 million since its inception.

“Its obviously hits home with us with Nick and (Hofstra grad and HEADstrong Foundation Vice President) Michael (Colleluori) being a part of our program,” said Hofstra men’s coach Seth Tierney. “We look forward to it every year.

“Lacrosse is a major part of it, but the big picture is certainly to raise awareness for cancer research and help Nick in any possible way in his vision of leading the HEADstrong Foundation.”

Participating teams in the NCC will be led by an honorary team captain who is either a survivor or current cancer patient. During the event, Cheryl Colleluori, HEADstrong President and Nick’s mother, will present the Nicholas Colleluori Award to a player from each participating team. The award is presented annually to a players whose contributions both on and off the field are transforming the landscape of their represented program.

Tickets for the Nicholas Colleluori Classic, which can be bought on the day of the event, are priced at $10 for adults and $5 for students ages 6-12. Children under five will be admitted free.
