From Press Release
For patients with blood cancers there are several hurdles that often prevent them from receiving a life-saving marrow transplant. Fees not covered by medical insurance, costs associated with processing and searching for matching marrow donors, travel and lodging expenses are just a few of them.
And with a new diagnosis happening every four minutes there has never been a more critical time to assist this effort, that is why Academy of New Church is teaming up with the HEADstrong Foundation™ to present a new fall youth lacrosse event called The Match Up.
The Match Up will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at the Academy of New Church (ANC), located in Bryn Athyn, Montgomery county. The event will consist of U11, U13 and U15 divisions. ANC has a sprawling complex that is the perfect setting for this lacrosse tournament. Participating teams will have the opportunity to play 3 games. The cost for each team to participate in The Match Up is $1,200; however teams are encouraged to take advantage of the early bird special of $200 off per team if registered prior to Monday, September 1, 2014. Register Today.
For ANC Boy’s Lacrosse Coach Rob Forster, a former teammate of HF Founder Nick Colleluori, bringing this new event to ANC holds special meaning.
“I had the pleasure and privilege of playing club lacrosse with Nick and I always felt that he was destined for great things,” said Forster. “As young players coming up, you never really think about what the future has in store, you just think that you will always be there to be part of it. I am very inspired by Nick’s life and I am honored to have played alongside of him. I am even more humbled to be able to create something today supporting his vision. On behalf of ANC we are proud to support Nick’s vision through The Match Up.”
The funds raised through the event will support the essentials services and programs offered by the HF™ to improve quality of life for cancer patients and their families. Additionally, the event will help observe the importance of becoming a lifesaving match for cancer patients in need of a bone marrow transplant. At the event, HEADstrong will conduct a bone marrow drive through BeTheMatch.org.
“On behalf of the HEADstrong Foundation and those affected by blood cancers we wish to extend our sincere appreciation to Academy of New Church for embracing our cause and helping to advance our mission through The Match Up,” said Cheryl Colleluori, HEADstrong President and Nick’s Mom. “We hope that teams will unite to recognize the dire need for bone marrow matches.
“When there is not a genetic match in the family from a parent or sibling, patients are put on a national donor list and that is what happened with our Nick. It costs approximately $150 to process the genetic testing for a potential marrow donor and we are honored to be able to offset that expense to successfully match people from all over the country and potentially save lives.”
