Katie O’Donnell is fully aware of who Emily Garrity is and what she accomplished as a lacrosse player from Philly.

So when O’Donnell passed Garrity’s all-time Pennsylvania career scoring record today by tallying her 407th goal when she pumped in nine in a 19-6 victory over visiting Downingtown West, she said it was an honor.

O’Donnell raised her season total to 110 with on regular-season game remaining. Henderson (13-3 overall, 8-2 in Ches-Mont) will also advance to the District 1 playoffs.

“It means a lot; it’s huge!” said O’Donnell, a Penn State signee. “I never thought I’d be given the opportunity to accomplish something like this. Garrity was a legend she is one of the best players to ever come out of the area and make a splash right away in college. so it was a goal to strive to be at the level that she was.”

Garrity, a Strath Haven grad who earned Player of the Year honors in 2009, was a key member of last year’s North Carolina NCAA championship team.

O’Donnell credited her teammates for her accomplishment.

“I mean obviously it’s my teammates,” she said. “The success I have had, individually, has been because of our overall team success and from the help of my teammates.

“We all support each other and my coaches and family have really pushed me along the way to have goals and do my best to accomplish them.”

Did she know she was close to the record?

“I had an idea I was close,” O’Donnell said. “We try not to talk about it, but they stopped the game and made an announcement. It was pretty awesome and truly an honor.”

Henderson coach Steph Kienle said a great work ethic is O’Donnell’s best trait.

“With all that Katie is capable of, I had no doubt she would be here,” she said, “setting records with her goals scoring. It really is incredible. You will not find a harder working player than Katie O’Donnell, and it shows in how she plays. I’m so proud of all she has accomplished and happy that she’s not finished just yet!”
