Freshman Reilly Walsh scored with 4.5 seconds to play Saturday, lifting Brunswick School to a 6-5 victory over St. Augustine Prep (N.J.) in the final boys’ game at the Checking for Cancer Invitational at Haverford School.

The goal capped a back-and-forth game and lifted the Bruins to 4-3 while the Hermits felt to 5-4. Joe Eisele

“It’s a huge win for us,” said Brunswick senior attackman Cam Stafford, a Vermont signee who had three goals and was named his team’s MVP. “Our ‘D’ came out in the second half and played strong and the offense possessed it more.”

St. Augustine led, 3-1, in the second period, but Stafford later scored back-to-back tallies to give his team 5-4 edge with 5:30 to play.

Hermits MVP Joe Eisele (two goals) tied it 1:13 later, but Brunswick had possession down the stretch and Walsh converted.

Eisele said the Hermits played well.

“I thought it was good to get out and play against a top team,” he said. “We didn’t get the win, but I thought overall we played well.

“We’ll just get back at it. We have a big game next Saturday vs. (undefeated) Shawnee (N.J.). We definitely had our chances but we didn’t convert and that ended up being the factor. We’ll fix a couple things in practice and we’ll be fine.”

Brunswick has won three straight after bowing to Top 20 teams Haverford School (9-5), Deerfield Academy (10-9 in OT) and Hill Academy (10-7).

“We had a rough start, but we’ve come back and this puts us back over .500,” said Stafford.
