From Press Release
Bryant University head men’s lacrosse coach Mike Pressler is pleased to name his team captains for the 2015 season.
The Bulldogs will rely on the leadership of four strong captains in seniors Kevin Massa (Huntington, N.Y.), Connor Dent (Havertown, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep) and Kevin Maiorano (Easton, Conn.), as well as junior Gunnar Waldt (Freeland, Md.).
“Once again, I could not be more pleased with the four selected by their peers to represent 2015 Bryant men’s lacrosse as team captains,” Pressler said. “All four will complement each other, as well as lead in their own individual way.”
A three-year starter on defense for the Black and Gold, Dent enters his senior year as the stronghold of the Bulldog backline. Dent finished second on the team with 18 caused turnovers in 2014, helping anchor Bryant’s fifth-ranked defense and fourth-ranked man-down unit. He enters his senior campaign ranked sixth on the program’s career caused turnovers list.
A two-time All-American and two-time New England and NEC Player of the Year, Massa is one of the best to ever grace the faceoff X not just at Bryant University, but in the history of NCAA lacrosse. With his final season of eligibility still at hand, the faceoff specialist has already set a new NCAA Division I mark for career ground balls, entering his senior year with 593, and sits second all-time in career faceoff wins, with 877. Last season as a junior, Massa led the nation in faceoff winning percentage (.588) and ground balls (225).
One of the most well-respected Bulldogs on the roster by coaches and teammates alike, Maiorano joins the ranks of captain for the 2015 season. Despite appearing in just a pair of contests last season, Maiorano has made a name for himself as one of the hardest working true student-athletes in the program over the last three years and will lead the team both on the field and in the classroom.
Just a redshirt-junior, Waldt completes Bryant’s quartet of captains for 2015. A Third Team All-American between the pipes last season, the junior netminder was named the NEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2014, accomplishing stellar numbers through the regular season before flooring opponents throughout postseason play to lead the Bulldogs to the NCAA Quarterfinals. The only goalie in the nation to rank in the top-10 in save percentage (.593), goals against average (7.92) and saves per game (11.45), Waldt enters his junior campaign already ranked fourth on the program’s career saves list (374) and all-time wins list (22).
“As we close out fall ball and get closer to the holidays, our coaching staff couldn’t be more pleased with the efforts of our team both academically and athletically,” said Pressler. “Minicamp 2015 will be in our laps before we know it, and all of us involved couldn’t be more excited to unveil the 2015 version of the Bryant men’s lacrosse program.”
