Kevin McGeary scored in overtime today to lift host Malvern Prep to a thrilling, rain-soaked 9-8 victory over Episcopal Academy in Inter-Ac League play.
The win lifted the No. 1 Friars to 12-0 overall and 4-0 in the Inter-Ac. EA fell to 3-7 overall and 2-2 in the Inter-Ac.
“We had our man up group in and the play didn’t go exactly how we wanted it,” said McGeary, a senior committed to Penn. “We moved the ball cleanly and I got a good pass from Sparky (Ryan Hilburn) and scored. It was pretty awesome to end it that way.”
The Friars have won four games by one goal this year.
“I think our team just has a lot of trust in each other,” McGeary said. “When people aren’t playing well we stick together.
“In a lot of games we’ve given up leads and we lose the killer instinct. Then in the end everyone locks down on defense and on offense pretty much everyone can score. There is no go-to guy that a team can shut off.”
Conor Glancy led Malvern Prep with four goals and McGeary had two goals and an assist while Adam Goldner, Kyle Anderson and Jarrett Donaghy each scored once. Hilburn had two assists.
EA rallied from an 8-6 deficit and tied it on a Buckley goal late in the game.
McGeary credited EA.
“They have good goalies and some pretty strong attackmen,” he said. “They are pretty athletic and can switch it up on defense. It was a tough game in the rain; both teams were having trouble with their sticks and the turnovers.”
Curtis Zappala led the Churchmen with two goals and three assists and Chris Friedman had two goals and an assist while Buckley scored twice. Tyler Haab and Jake Martellucci each had a goal and an assist. Brian Zappala made 12 saves in goal.
At the face-off X, Malvern Prep’s Charles Kelly had a slight edge over EA’s Matt Ernst.
Malvern Prep hosts Hill School Wednesday and then gears for a showdown next Tuesday at No. 2 Haverford School, also undefeated in the Inter-Ac.
“They have a good team and it should be a good, hard-fought battle,” said McGeary.
