Mitch Soufleris and Zach Drake scored fourth-period goals today to break a tie game suspended after three quarters a day earlier, leading host La Salle to a 7-6 victory over St. Joseph’s Prep in a battle of Catholic League leaders.
La Salle (7-5 overall) took over first place with a 7-0 mark. The Prep (9-4) is 6-1.
“Every time we play St. Joe’s Prep it’s a very competitive game,” said Drake, a junior committed to Lehigh. “We’ve lost a couple one-goal games to Malvern Prep and Hill Academy so it’s nice to get one.
“At the same time it’s a regular-season game and we have to keep moving on and put it in our back pocket.”
The game was halted due to lightning after a high-scoring third period when the Explorers rallied from a 3-1 deficit with four goals. The offense continued today with the help of freshman Anthony Giuliani, who won all four face-offs and finished 12 of 16 from the X.
St. Joe’s Prep drew within 7-6 on a tally by Peter Gayhardt (two goals), but strong defense and goaltending by Colin MacDougall (14 saves) held.
“We wanted to get the possessions and slow the ball down and get the defense relaxed so we could strike when they were not ready,” said Drake, a junior committed to Lehigh.
Soufleris finished with two goals while Chris Hladczuk and Stephen Hudak each had a goal and an assist for La Salle.
“It was a good hard fought game by both teams,” said La Salle coach Bill Leahy. “It’s a great rivalry and hopefully we will see them again in the playoffs.”
