The win moved the Fords, ranked No. 1 by Phillylacrosse.com, to 1-1 after their 13-8 loss to another MIAA power, McDonogh on Saturday. Loyola, which toppled Inter-Ac member Penn Charter in its opener, also is 1-1.

Loyola led, 5-3, at halftime, but the Fords roared back in the third quarter on goals by Brendan O’Neill (from Ament), Phil Poquie, McBride and Odiorne to seize a lead they would never relinquish. The Dons closed within a goal three times, but McBride and Odiorne scored to make it 11-8 and the Fords’ defense, led by sophomore goalie Alex deMarco, held on.

“It was a rough game on Saturday and we knew we had a lot to prove, especially with all the talent we have,” said Ament, a junior attackman committed to Penn State. “Luckily, we were great in the middle of the field and we won the groundball battle.”0

Ament said the Fords – who entered the year ranked No. 2 in the nation in several polls – needed to bounce back from saturday’s loss.

“We learned that you can have great individual players – and we do have great individual players – but we’re nothing without a team,” he said. “We have all the pieces to the puzzle – and they are still not together – but we came out on top against a great team.”

Haverford started of quickly, taking a 2-0 lead on goals by Odiorne and McBride. But Loyola scored five of the next six goals to seize a 5-3 edge. Jack Lombardo (two goals) scored just before the half to give his team the two-goal edge. Ryan Conrad led the Dons with three goals and an assist.
