Nick Vernacchio scored off a feed from Michael Sowers to lift visiting Upper Dublin to a stunning 7-6 overtime victory tonight over Ridley in the second round of the District 1 boys’ lacrosse tournament.
The win advances the Cardinals (17-3) into Saturday’s quarterfinals against second-0seeded Bishop Shanahan at Harriton at a time to be determined. Shanahan toppled Wissahickon, 13-2.
The Cards were down, 6-3, midway through the third period but began pecking away at the Ridley ((14-5) lead.
Michael Sowers (two goals, four assists) scored to make it 6-4 shortly before the fourth quarter began and later set up Evan Scott to make it 6-5 with only minutes to play. Upper Dublin tied it, 6-6, when Sowers fed Michael Mullen.
“To be able to play with a program with such a history and be on the field with Ridley was a great accomplishment for our team,” said Upper Dublin coach JP Banks, whose squad has reached the quarterfinals two straight years. “It was a great game and a shame either team’s season had to end.
“Both teams battled for four quarters and OT. It was a great game to watch. I am happy for the boys. but once they get off the bus they have to realize it’s time to start getting ready for Bishop Shanahan.”
Lou Harrison had three goals for the Green raiders and Brock Anderson added a pair.
