Jack Robbins scored four goals and Jake Scott tallied three as Conestoga defeated La Salle, 10-8, Saturday at the 14th Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival at Radnor High.
The game matched two teams that have met in the PIAA finals in four of the five years it’s been held. Last year La Salle handled the Pioneers, 13-4, in the title game.
This meeting saw the Pioneers (9-3) take a 6-5 lead in the third period on a goal by face-off specialist Christian Jobs and then pour in four more goals in the final period.
“We got revenge from last year after losing in the State Championship to La Salle,” said Scott, a senior headed to Harvard. “I got a lot more shots today then I have in the past.”
Jack Green (six saves) helped the Pioneers seize a 5-3 first-half lead. John Roulston had six saves in the second half. Matt Schleicher had a goal and an assist and Alex Mezey scored once while Chris Brady dished three assists.
“The whole team played with great energy and hustled today,” Conestoga coach Brian Sampson said. “We have to build from this and get this going consistently.”
Mitch Soufleris led La Salle with three goals.
“The center of the field was the difference: goaltending, crease offense, and crease defense,” said La Salle coach Bill Leahy. “There is an old Maryland saying that if you are strong up the middle the win is a lot easier.”
