Olivia Nostrant scored seven goals and Jackie Benedict added four goals and an assist Saturday as Merion Mercy defeated Notre Dame Academy 17-11 in one of five girls’ games played at Agnes Irwin in the Checking for Cancer Invitational.
The event raised money and awareness for the fight against men’s cancers (colorectal, prostate and testicular) and was co-founded six years ago by Nostrant’s father, Haverford School coach John Nostrant, a prostate cancer survivor.
The Merion Mercy game also was played to benefit the Kelly Rooney Foundation and the Rooney Cup. Kelly Rooney, the mother of Merion Mercy senior Quinn (who does not play lacrosse) and graduates Casey Rooney (2010) and Haley Rooney (2012), both former laxers, passed away after a courageous battle with breast cancer on July 11, 2006. A fourth daughter, Molly, graduated from Sacred Heart in 2010.
Nostrant said the week’s focus was on these foundations so relevant to the players.
“Quinn is a great friend to all of us so we were talking about that all week,” said Nostrant. “And from playing in a game for the Checking for Cancer for four years, that’s also so important to us.
” I think everyone knows a lot of people that have been affected by (cancer) so it’s great for all of us to come together to support (the foundations). I think we are all very fortunate and lucky to be a part of the lacrosse community. Onthe girls’ side, we are raising awareness and helping the families affected by it and that’s great.”
Nostrant – who has signed with High Point – said she thinks of her father when playing in a Checking for Cancer Invitational game.
“When I step onto the field I think about him and I play for him,” she said. “It’s great that I can be a part of it.”
Caroline Allen had four goals for Notre Dame.
