Tuesday afternoon, the Garnet Valley players celebrated their big win over defending PIAA champion Harriton.

Wednesday, Jaguars head coach Jenny Purvis talked about the things she saw in that game that didn’t make her very happy.

“That was a tough game, and we knew we had another tough game (Thursday night),” said senior midfielder Dana Davis, after the Jaguars had remained undefeated (9-0) and moved into first place in the Central League (6-0) with their 13-9 decision over Springfield-Delco (6-0, 4-1) at Moe DeFrank Stadium.

“When we saw the (Harriton game) film (Wednesday), we knew there were things we had to do with our defense.”

GV surrendered 17 goals at Harriton Tuesday, but cut that number in half against Springfield-Delco, limiting the Cougars to three goals in the opening half while goalie Paige Mitros was turning aside six shots.

The Jaguars scored the first three goals of the second half, but the Cougars stayed in the game and got five of the last six goals in the game’s last 11 minutes.

“We’ve played some tough teams, and we are going to Maryland (Monday) and know that (Good Counsel) is another good team we have to face,” Davis said. “It’s good that we had a game like tonight before having to play that game.”

Davis, Katie Stec, Molly Savage, Nova Ward and Haley Warden were among the GV players making big efforts on defense against a Springfield attack that averaged 13 goals in its first six games.

“We put some new things in for Harriton because they are very fast and like to run a lot of (isolation) plays,” Stec said. “We made sure we all had someone there to help us out.

“Springfield likes to run a lot of stuff around the crease, so we had to be sure we were there for each other.”

Sophomore Emily Mathewson got a pair of goals in each half, and senior Haley Warden chipped in with three goals and three assists to pace the Garnet Valley attack. Madison Valerio continued her solid recent play with two goals and two assists, and Davis and Sabrina Fusco also scored twice.

“The first half was what we wanted,” Purvis said. “The defense made sure we could slow them down and make them do a little more of what we wanted.”

Emily Santana scored a goal in each half and Aly Gormley tallied twice in the second half for Springfield, which faces Catholic League leader Archbishop Carroll Monday afternoon. Kate Ryan and Autumn Spence both got a goal and an assist for the Cougars.
