The season is young, and so are many of the Agnes Irwin players.

The Owls also are 2-0 after their 18-14 victory over visiting Central League contender Conestoga at Phelps Field Saturday morning.

Soph Hannah Keating, who scored eight times in Tuesday’s win over Friends’ Central, added six goals against the Pioneers, including five in the first half as Agnes Irwin built a 10-8 lead. The Owls got the final three scores in those 25 minutes, with sophomore Laura Pansini coming up with a pair and soph Kristin Burnetta chipping in with the first of her three goals.

Pansini opened the scoring in the second half with a goal five minutes in, and finished with five goals. Senior Bridget Chakey assisted on five Irwin goals.

“We had already played a game this week and they hadn’t,” Pansini said. “We were confident, and our coaches had told us what we had to do to beat this team. We knew we couldn’t try to force the ball in. We just had to play our game.”

Conestoga’s Abby Lord was playing the way her coach, Amy Orcutt, wanted in the first half, scoring four of her five goals. Maggie Friel (three goals) had two scores and two assists by halftime.

“Agnes Irwin has a fine team,” Orcutt said. “We have a new starting lineup this year, and we capitalized at the offensive end today. I was pleased with that. We know we had some breakdowns in transition, and those are the kind of things we will have to work on.”

Pansini thought that the pressure the Owls applied throughout both halves turned the game in their favor.

“We were told to come out strong and keep that up throughout the game,” she said.

A goal by Monica Borzillo with 8:49 to play cut Conestoga’s deficit to two goals. Agnes Irwin coach Jenny Duckenfield instructed her team to play patiently and look for good shots, and the Owls got five goals in the next six minutes while limiting ’Stoga to one score.

“Sarah Platt did a nice job in the second half holding Friel down,” Duckenfield said. “And we controlled the groundballs in that half. (Conestoga) is going to have a good team, so it’s nice to get this win.

“We made cuts, caught the ball and moved it up the field. That’s what we have to do.”
