TOWSON, Md. – Malvern Prep opened its 2014 season with an impressive 8-5 win on the road against the defending MIAA champion, Loyola Blakefield (MD), on Saturday morning.
Senior midfielder Kevin McGeary and attackman Kyle Anderson had two goals each for the Friars while Adam Goldner added a goal and three assists and Charles Kelly won 12 of 17 face-offs. Carson Cocco was solid in goal with nine saves for Malvern Prep, ranked No. 20 in the Warrior/TopLaxRecruits rankings.
The Friars opened the first quarter with three scores from McGeary, Anderson, and AJ Traynor. And then in the second Traynor found his brother Tripp for a score to put Malvern Prep up 4-0 heading into halftime.
Throughout the first half the Malvern Prep’s defense and goalie play was strong, not allowing the Dons (1-2) any daylight to get anything going.
“We have good defenders, good D-middies, the goalie did a really good job today,” said Malvern Prep coach John McEvoy. “That’s what we expect out of them.”
Loyola Blakefield started to untracked late in the third quarter when Graham Lorber scored on an extra-man goal with 1:56 left. Jack Lombardo got the assist. Alex Roesner and Ryan Conrad chipped in two more scores to end the third quarter trailing 6-3.
The Dons had trouble throughout trying to pass the ball, committing costly turnovers, and making bad shots on goal.
Malvern Prep seized a 7-3 lead when Anderson scored his second goal in the fourth period. Loyola Blakefield scored back-to-back goals late in the fourth from Lorber and Conrad. But McGeary iced it with 1:07 left in the game to make it 8-5.
“It’s definitely a great start to our season,” said Goldner. “Going back to Philly, it’s really great to get a win and get off on a high note.”
“We got a lot of loose balls and played good D; if you can do that you will do well,” said McEvoy. “(We did well) on the face-offs, the goalie played well … we did the little things well.
“We made a lot of mistakes, we let them back in the game. It got a little sketchy there in the fourth, but overall there were some really good things work on and we did and we can build upon. “
