The Drexel women’s lacrosse team opened its season with a victory on Sunday against George Washington, and got more good news on Monday afternoon as the Colonial Athletic Association recognized two of its members with weekly awards. Amanda Norcini (Conestoga) was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week, while Eva Winiarski (Downingtown West) took home the CAA’s first Rookie of the Week award of the season.
Norcini had perhaps the best all-around game for the Dragons in their 12-7 win over George Washington. The senior midfielder forced a team-high three Colonials turnovers and impressively picked up eight ground balls — one shy of a program single-game record. On top of that, the Wayne native added four goals, which matched a career high, as the Dragons won their opener for the seventh straight season.
Winiarski only took one shot in her first career college game, but the redshirt-freshman made it count, as it found the back of the net to give the Dragons a 3-2 lead over George Washington. That goal put the team ahead for good after trailing 2-1 early in the contest. Winiarski finished with five draw controls as well and helped her first-year head coach, Hannah Rudloff, earn her first career coaching victory.
The Dragons will return to the field on Sunday afternoon when they host crosstown rival Saint Joseph’s at 1:00 p.m. at Vidas Field.
