Following dominant efforts in Sunday’s 7-6 triple overtime thriller over #20 Villanova, Lehigh men’s lacrosse junior Matt Poillon and sophomore Tripp Telesco have earned Patriot League weekly awards, as announced on Monday. Poillon was named Goalie of the Week for the ninth time in his decorated career while Telesco garnered Defensive Player of the Week laurels, his third-career honor after being named Rookie of the Week twice as a freshman.

Poillon made 12 saves against the Wildcats, allowing just six goals for a third straight game. Eight of his saves came after halftime. After Villanova tied the score at six, Poillon made three big saves the rest of the way to keep the Mountain Hawks alive as junior Kurtis Kaunas ended the marathon with seven seconds left in the third overtime. Poillon made five stops in the third quarter, allowing the offense to score five straight and turn a 3-1 deficit into a 6-3 lead.

For the season, Poillon owns a 5.73 GAA and 60.0 save percentage. He is now an incredible 28-6 in his career between the pipes.

Telesco was a dominant force on Sunday, finishing with career highs in groundballs (7) and caused turnovers (7). Telesco posted two groundballs and two caused turnovers in the four-minute second overtime period alone. He covered Devin McNamara who was held to a single assists and turned the ball over 10 times.

Telesco and the defense held Villanova scoreless for a stretch of 20:19 bridging the second and third quarters, and over the game’s final 23:14. The Wildcats turned the ball over 29 times as Lehigh’s starting close defense combined for 18 groundballs and 10 caused turnovers. Telesco now owns 11 groundballs and eight caused turnovers on the season.

Following wins over Furman, Marquette and Villanova, Lehigh jumped to #14 in the national Media Poll and 15 in the Coaches Poll. The Mountain Hawks are 3-0 for the first time since 2000. After beating Marquette last Saturday (Feb. 8), the Golden Eagles went on to defeat Hofstra on Saturday.

Lehigh now hits the road the next Saturday for its Patriot League opener at Boston University. Opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
