From Press Release
The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse squad found itself on the short end of a hard-fought, low-scoring affair Saturday evening as the Blue Hens dropped a 6-4 non-league verdict to host Bucknell.
Delaware (1-1), which opened its season with a 10-3 win over High Point last week, could manage just a single goal in each period in dropping its first contest of the season.
No. 15 ranked Bucknell (1-0), which was playing it season opener, jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter and led the rest of the way as the Bison downed Delaware for the second straight year but for only the second time in the last 23 meetings.
“This was a hard-fought, physical game and both teams really went at it,” said Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw. “There was great goaltending by both teams and it was pretty evenly matched the entire day. We had some good opportunities and we just didn’t capitalize on the offensive end.”
Delaware sophomore Connor Frisina (Conestoga) and senior Connor McRoy each scored a goal and added an assist while Tom Holland and Brian Kormondy tallied the other two goals. Blue Hen sophomore goalkeeper Conor Peaks recorded his second straight outstanding effort as he turned back 11 Bucknell shots.
Bucknell got single goals from six different players with Kyle Shanahan also adding an assist. Goalkeeper Sam Grinberg recorded 12 saves.
The game was a virtual standstill statistically. Bucknell held a slim 37-33 on shots while Delaware held a 32-25 advantage in groundballs and had just one more turnover (13-12) than the Bison. The Blue Hens won 8 of 13 faceoffs with Tyler Barbarich (Twist Lacrosse) winning six of eight draws.
Senior defenseman Jackson Place (Episcopal Academy) had two groundballs and two caused turnovers for the Bison.
McRoy tied the game at 1-1 four minutes into the game, but Bucknell responded with two straight goals and tallied five of the next six to take control at 6-2 early in the third quarter.
Delaware got a man-up goal by Frisina with 7:24 left in the third quarter that cut the lead to 6-3 but neither team scored again until Kormondy scored with just three seconds left to play.
The Blue Hens converted on 2 of 6 extra-man goal opportunities and killed all four of their own penalties. Delaware has now killed all nine penalties this season.
Delaware will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 15, when the Hens host Fairfield at 1 p.m. at Delaware Stadium.
