Cornell Head Coach Jenny Graap (West Chester East) has announced the incoming freshman class that will look to help bring the Ivy League Championship back to East Hill for the first time since 2006 and carry the Big Red to its fourth NCAA tournament appearance in the history of the program.
“We’re excited to welcome the Class of 2017 to campus,” Graap said. “This is a strong group of talented student-athletes. We feel they have excellent potential to impact our program and help Cornell women’s lacrosse compete for championships; both Ivy League and NCAA.”
The nine-member class comes to Ithaca from five different states; as near as the familiar regions of Upstate New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania and as far as Colorado and Florida. The class is made up of two attackers, six midfielders and a goalkeeper; five of whom were named US Lacrosse First Team All-Americans following the 2013 season.
Catie Smith | M | Berwyn, Pa. | Conestoga HS
Smith played four years of high school lacrosse as a midfielder for Conestoga. She was a team co-captain in her senior year and was the Attack MVP in both 2012 and 2013. Was an All-Phillylacrosse.com Second Team pick in 2013. She was named Academic All-American and First Team All-Central League following her senior season. Smith was also named to the Central League Honorable Mention team in 2012 and also made the WDNT Philly 1 Team in her junior year.
Meredith Baker | M | Vero Beach, Fla. | Vero Beach HS
Baker, a midfielder, played four years for Florida high school powerhouse Vero Beach, where she helped the team to four consecutive state championships from 2010 to 2013. She was a First Team All-American in 2013 and was also named First Team All-Region in 2012 and 2013, First Team All-District in those years and an Academic All-American in 2013. Baker was her school’s team captain in her senior year and made the South Florida National Team in 2012. She was also named to the Under Armour Underclassmen All-America South Team as a sophomore in 2011. Besides lacrosse, Baker was a four-year member of the weightlifting team in high school. She played her club lacrosse for XTeam.
Amie Dickson | M | Greenwich, Conn. | Hotchkiss School
Dickson, a three-sport athlete at The Hotchkiss School, played three years of lacrosse and soccer as well as one year of ice hockey in high school. She was a member of Hotchkiss’ Western New England Championship lacrosse teams in both her sophomore and senior season. She was name First Team All-American in 2013 as well as a NEPSWLA All-Star while serving as team captain that same year. On the soccer field, Dickson was a Founders League All-Star in 2010 and 2011 and served as the team’s captain her senior year. Dickson played club lacrosse for the CT Chargers.
Kristy Gilbert | M | Darien, Conn. | Darien HS
A three-sport athlete in high school, Gilbert excelled on the soccer pitch, on the track and on the lacrosse field. She was a team captain of her lacrosse squad in 2013 and won the state championship in 2011. She was named First Team All-American in 2013, All-FCIAC Honorable Mention in 2012, and her team was the FCIAC champion in 2012. For soccer, Gilbert was All-FCIAC Honorable Mention in 2010 and 2012 and was a team captain in 2012. Gilbert played club lacrosse for the Connecticut Chargers.
Kailey O’Hagan | M | Pound Ridge, N.Y. | Fox Lane HS
O’Hagan was a dual-sport athlete at Fox Lane High School, playing four years of lacrosse and three years of soccer, both in the midfield. She was named to the Section 1 first team all four years for lacrosse and was a two-time All-League selection for the Foxes’ soccer team. O’Hagan served as a team captain on her lacrosse squad as a senior and was named Academic All-American that same year. She was also a member of the CT Chargers club team.
Mandy Powell | M | Honeoye Falls, N.Y. | Honeoye Falls-Lima HS
Powell was a three-sport athlete in high school, playing lacrosse as a midfielder, basketball as a guard and forward and also playing on her tennis team for one year. Powell’s lacrosse teams were New York State Section V champions and state finalists in 2010 and 2012. In her senior season she helped her team reach the New York State semifinals in Class C. She was named All-Monroe County Second Team in 2011, First Team in 2013 and an Academic All-American in 2012 and 2013. She served as a team captain in her senior year. Powell also played club lacrosse for Lady Roc.
Catherine Ellis | A | Greenwood Village, Colo. | Kent Denver School
Ellis played club lacrosse for Team 180 where she won the Sandstorm Tournament in Palm Springs, Calif., for four consecutive seasons. She was a member of Team Colorado for the WDNT in 2011 and 2012 in Stony Brook, N.Y., and her team won the tournament in their division in 2011. A multi-sport athlete in high school, Ellis played four years of field hockey and lacrosse at Kent Denver, serving as captain in both sports as a senior. She was named First Team All-American in lacrosse in both 2012 and 2013 as well as Academic All-American in field hockey in 2012 and lacrosse in 2013. Catherine’s other awards include: First Team All-State in 2011 and 2012 and First Team All-State in field hockey in 2012. Her field hockey team was state champions in 2009 and 2011 and runners up in 2012. On the lacrosse field, her team was a semifinalist in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Christie Powell | A | Honeoye Falls, N.Y. | Honeoye Falls-Lima HS
A three-sport athlete in high school, Powell played two years of basketball as a forward and guard while also starring as a midfielder on her school’s soccer team and a midfielder and attacker on her lacrosse team. Powell’s high school lacrosse team competed for the Class C state championship in 2010 and 2012. In her senior season she helped her team reach the New York State semifinals in Class C. She also earned Academic All-American honors in 2013. Powell played club lacrosse for Lady Roc.
Renee Poullott | GK | Syracuse, N.Y. | Marcellus HS
Poullott played her club lacrosse with the Star Riders Lacrosse Club. She made the Under Armour All-American Games in 2011-12 and was on the WDNT Team in 2011 and 2012. She was also the MVP of the Star Spangled Tournament from 2007 to 2010. Poullott was a star lacrosse player in high school earning First Team All-American honors her senior season, while also making the 2011and 2012 First Team for the OHSL Liberty League. She served as a team captain in 2012. She was also a two-year shot put thrower and a four-year doubles tennis player in high school. On the tennis court, she was on the 2012 All-OHSL Liberty League First Team and advanced to the state tournament for first doubles. She was her team doubles MVP in 2011 and 2012.
